CLERMONT, FL - Today the Calvin softball picked up a sweep on day four of its spring break trip as it defeated Roger Williams and Rhode Island.
Â
GAME ONE
CALVIN 4, ROGER WILLIAMS 4
Â
In the first game of the day the Knights took on the Hawks from Roger Williams University. After two scoreless innings Calvin saw its first opportunity of the day in the top of the third when freshman
Bella Duimstra (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian). Two batters later, senior
Carly Dole (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) stepped up and took matters into her own hands as she sent a bomb over the center field fence to give Calvin the 2-0 lead.
Â
The Knights kept things rolling in the top of the fourth when freshman
Kendall Jordan (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) singled to center field before
Emily Sweetland (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) and
Addie Edwards (Midland, Mich./Midland) forced back-to-back walks to load the bases. One runner crossed the plate on when junior
Mya Brickley (Battle Creek, Mich./Delton Kellogg) forced a walk while another run scored on a ground ball from freshman pinch hitter
Analy Guth (Southgate, Mich./Trenton).
Â
In the circle, senior
Brooke Hunderman (Grand Rapids, Mich./Calvin Christian) went all seven innings for the Knights as she recorded ten strikeouts in Calvin's 4-0 victory.
Â
GAME TWO
CALVIN 2, RHODE ISLAND 0
Â
Looking to carry the momentum from the morning into the afternoon, Calvin got things rolling early against Rhode Island when Duimstra singled to lead off the bottom of the first. Duimstra showed off her speed when she stole a base to move into scoring position before being brought home by a double from freshman
Audrey Ford (Kalamazoo, Mich./Mattawan).
Â
After that, runs were hard to come by for both teams as the next four innings passed by scoreless. It wasn't until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Knights had their next scoring opportunity as Dole singled to right field before advancing to second on a passed ball. Two batters later, freshman
Kendall Jordan (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) delivered a timely single through the left side to bring Dole home and make the score 2-0.
Â
Freshman Camila Rameriez-Quijada (South Bend, Ind./Mishawaka) got her first career start in the circle for the Knights and went on to claim her first victory when the Knights defense held Rhode Island scoreless. Rameriez-Quijada recorded four strikeouts while senior
Emma Ludema (Martin, Mich./Wayland) also saw time in the circle where she notched three strikeouts.
Â
COACHES COMMENTS: "Really happy we were able to get the sweep today going into the off day," said head coach
Becky Hilgert. "It is always great to hold teams scoreless, and I felt out pitchers executed our strategy well in both games and our defense played solid, and made plays in big moments. Offensively, we still need to make adjustments quicker and I felt we left too many runs on the table, especially in the second game. We will get some rest and look forward to competing against two more tough opponents on Friday."
Â
UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Thursday, March 13th when they take on Alfred University at 11:30 AM and Hiram at 1:45 PM.
