Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Outside Shooting and Defense Key Calvin Men’s Basketball to 91-55 Win

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University men's basketball team recorded its best outside shooting performance of the season on the way to a 91-55 win over Kalamazoo College on Saturday at Van Noord Arena.

Calvin (15-6, 7-3 MIAA) shot 17-40 from beyond the three-point arc, with the 17 made three-pointers setting a new season high.

Trevin Winkle (McBain, Mich./Northern Michigan Christian) got the Knights going from the opening tip, scoring from distance on the opening possession of the game and making four three-pointers in the opening six minutes. For the first half, Winkle went 6-8 from distance and scored 18 points.

While Winkle and the Knights shot 10-18 from downtown in the first half, Jalen Overway (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) made Kalamazoo (3-18, 0-10 MIAA) pay inside with 20 first-half points on 8-8 shooting and even made his lone three-point attempt to help the Knights to a 52-23 halftime advantage.

The Calvin offense shot 63.3 percent from the field in the first half while the defense held the Hornets to 25.7 percent overall and 3-18 from three-point range.

The second half was more of the same, as the Knights pushed their lead as high as 39 points before emptying the bench over the final 10 minutes. That bench unit also got into the action from distance, with Tuna Teksen (Izmir, Turkey) scoring six points and making his lone three-point attempt while Quinton Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) also made a three-pointer in the final minutes.

Calvin finished the game shooting 50.8 percent overall and 42.5 percent from distance for the game while also outrebounding the Hornets 49-34. The Knights also moved the ball well against the Hornets' zone defense, recording 27 assists on 31 field goals with six different players recording at least three assists.

Overway finished with a game-high 29 points on 11-12 shooting, with his lone miss coming from three-point range on his final attempt that snapped a streak of 21 consecutive made field goals against the Hornets this season (he shot 10-10 in the first meeting on January 14). Overway also moved into eighth place in Calvin men's basketball program history with 1,592 career points, passing former teammate Uchenna Egekeze and current Calvin assistant coach Derrick DeVries on the all-time list.

Winkle tied a career high with 21 points on the day and finished 7-10 from distance for the game. Parker Swartz (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview/Ohio Dominican) added 11 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

COACH'S COMMENT: "We had a couple of miscommunications early defensively, but I thought really from the 15-minute mark (of the first half) to the five-minute mark we really locked down and left nowhere for them to go and contested every shot," Calvin head coach Bill Sall said. "And I really liked our pace out of that. I thought we did a really good job of pushing the ball and finding our shooters. It was great to make shots tonight. Big for us. 17 today and there have been some games where we struggle to get three or four of them. So that's really good momentum going into what is going to be a huge week."

NEXT UP: Calvin men's basketball will return to action on Wednesday, February 11, when it travels to The University of Olivet for a game scheduled to tip off at 7:30 PM.
