Calvin Women's Basketball Prepares for Saturday Road Trip to Kalamazoo

Grand Rapids, MI – The Calvin University women's basketball will travel to Kalamazoo on Saturday for a 1 p.m. MIAA contest at Kalamazoo's Anderson Athletic Center. Saturday will mark the second meeting of the season between the two teams with Calvin securing a 64-45 victory over the Hornets January 14 at Calvin.

The Teams: Calvin and Kalamazoo. The Knights enter the game with a 12-9 overall record and a 7-5 MIAA mark. The Hornets enter the matchup with a 2-11 overall record and have a 1-3 MIAA mark. Calvin currently sits in fourth place in the MIAA standings, two-and-a-half games ahead of fifth place Alma and Kalamazoo and a half game behind third place Albion. Kalamazoo is 6-14 overall and 5-6 in the MIAA, two-and-a-half games behind the Knights in the league standings and a game-and-a-half ahead of sixth place Kalamazoo.

The Coaches: Mark Christner is in his 7th season as head coach of the Calvin men's basketball program. Christner arrived at Calvin in time for the 2019-20 season after previously serving as head men's basketball coach at Waynesburg University (nine years). Christner is a former Calvin men's basketball player and later served as an assistant coach with both the Calvin men's and women's basketball programs before taking the Waynesburg head men's basketball coaching position in 2010. Earlier this season, Christner recorded his 100th victory as Calvin women's basketball coach. Kalamazoo is led by head coach Ryan Clark who is in his third year as Kalamazoo head women's basketball coach. A Kalamazoo College graduate, Clark was a standout player on the Kalamazoo College men's basketball team. He later served as head women's and also head men's basketball coach at Alma College before returning to his alma mater in the summer of 2023.

The Players: The Knights are led in scoring and rebounding by senior Anna Fernandez who averages 15.8 points and 5.3 rebounds a game. She scored a career-high 30 points in a January 7 loss at Alma. She is ranked second in the MIAA scoring race and has posted three consecutive games of 20 points or more. Senior forward RyAnn Rohrer averages 11.9 points and 8.0 rebounds a game. She has posted five double-doubles this season and is ranked fourth in the MIAA in scoring average and second in rebounding. Junior Katelyn LaRue averages 8.5 points and 2.9 rebounds a game. She notched 15 points in a 73-62 win at Adrian Wednesday and was 4-of-4 from three-point range. Kalamazoo is led in scoring by junior guard Ruby Hogan. Also a standout women's soccer player, Hogan averages 12.6 points and 7.1 rebounds a game. Senior Lauren VanderStelt averages 9.7 points, 10.2 rebounds and 3.6 blocks a game. She leads the MIAA in rebounding and blocked shots.
