Calvin Women's Basketball Celebrates Senior Night With Dominant Victory Over Alma

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Today the Calvin women's basketball team wrapped up their regular season and celebrated senior night in style when they defeated the Scots of Alma 85-52 in Van Noord Arena. With tonight's win the Knights finish the regular season with a 5-9 MIAA record and a 15-10 overall record.

The Knights came out swinging in the first quarter as senior Anna Fernandez (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) and junior RyAnn Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington) both got out to a hot start. By the end of the quarter, the Knights had shot an impressive 47.1 percent from the field and claimed a 18-9 lead.

Calvin kept things rolling in the second quarter as junior Ashley Raredon (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian) got in on the scoring action before senior Emma Witte (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) entered the game and knocked down a shot from beyond the arc. Halfway through the quarter the Scots found some momentum when they went on a 11-2 run and successfully cut the Calvin lead down to just three points. Looking to respond, Calvin ended the half with a run of their own as buckets from Chloe Wiegers (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) and Gabby Halliwill (Charlotte, Mich./Lansing Catholic) boosted the Knights to a 33-24 lead heading into halftime.

Fernandez led the charge in the third quarter with ten points and three steals as the Knights surged on offense and outscored the Scots 30-14. Continuing into the fourth quarter, junior Katelyn LaRue (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) delivered a dagger with just under four minutes left when she nailed back-to-back three pointers to stretch the Calvin lead to twenty-nine points. Down the stretch, freshman Makara Obande (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) entered chipped in a pair of free-throws before fellow freshman Lily Nitz (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian) finished things off with a three-pointer to give Calvin the dominant 85-52 victory.

The Knights finished the game with a 53.3 shooting percentage while also shooting a blistering 50.0 percent from beyond the arc. Fernandez finished as the Knights leading scorer with twenty-one points and five assists while LaRue chipped in fifteen points. Halliwill (12), Raredon (11), and Rohrer (10) all finished in double digits while Wiegers finished with a team high eight assists.

Tonight, Calvin also honored their three graduating seniors: Fernandez, Witte, and Sami DeKuiper (Rockford, Mich./Rockford).

COACHES COMMENTS: "Really proud of all three of our seniors," said head coach Mark Christner. "The care that our team demonstrated to play well for them tonight was very evident and I deeply appreciate that. This group of seniors has been through a lot and I know they love each other; they love playing and they love representing Calvin so it was a really good win for us. Overall, I thought we played really well tonight and I was thrilled with our shot making and our ability to find good shots for people. I have to remind the team that we are the defending tournament champs and if we play like this heading into next week I think we're going to be really tough to beat."

UP NEXT: The Knights will look onward to the MIAA Tournament where they will be the No. 4 seed. Calvin will host the quarterfinal at Van Noord Arena on Wednesday, February 25th and will await to find out who their opponent is after the results of this weekend's games.
