ALMA, Mich. - Today the Calvin women's soccer team defeated the Scots of Alma 1-0 in its regular season finale to clinch a share of the MIAA regular season title. This marks the 18th title for the Knights, including the seventh in a row for head coach
Emily Ottenhoff. It also marks the second shared MIAA title between Calvin and Hope with the first coming in 2005.
In the first half, despite Calvin controlling the possession and keeping the ball in enemy territory, neither team was able to find the back of the net. The Knights outshot the Scots 16-1 in the first half with senior
Mikaela Waroway (Ann Arbor, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) recording two shots on goal and junior
Ellery Boeving (Howell, Mich./Howell) accounting for one.
As the second half got underway it seemed as though the trends of the first half carried over. While the Knights dominated the ball and continued to pepper the Scots defense with shot after shot the Alma goalkeeper remained unshaken and the score remained 0-0.
Finally, in the 77th minute, the Knights found an opening when senior defender
Lucy Iverson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) gathered the ball on the left side of the center circle. She took one touch before firing a shot from long range that flew through the hands of the Alma goalkeeper and connected with the back of the net to give Calvin the 1-0 lead.
For the final minutes of the match the Knights packed in defensively and smothered any scoring attempt that the Scots tried to create. When the final whistle blew the Knight picked up the victory to close out the regular season with an overall record of 14-1-1 and a conference record of 7-0-1. They also successfully clinched the top seed for MIAA Tournament presented by Collegiate Credit Union, based on MIAA goal differential with Calvin finishing +2 (ahead) of Hope.
The goal by Iverson was the 17th of her collegiate career and the 8th game-winner of her career.
The Knights concluded the match out shooting Alma 30-1 with seven of those shots being on goal. Junior goalkeeper
Aubree Lee (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) and the rest of the Calvin defense wrapped up their stellar regular season showing having not allowed a single goal in MIAA conference play.
COACHES COMMENTS: "We're happy to get a road win and clinch another conference regular season championship," said coach Ottenhoff. "Big credit to Alma who came with an incredible effort and made it really difficult to score. We have some work to do going forward before we head into the conference tournament but going to enjoy this one tonight."
