Calvin Women's Soccer Grinds Out 1-0 Victory Over Trine

Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Today the Calvin women's soccer team continued its MIAA conference schedule with a 1-0 victory over the Thunder of Trine University. With today's win the Knights improved to 10-1 overall record and a perfect 4-0 MIAA record.

The Knights wasted no time getting the action started when senior Mikaela Waroway (Ann Arbor, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) received the ball deep in enemy territory just seven minutes into the match. With a Thunder defender on her back, Waroway pulled off a nifty spin move to create space and slip past the last line of defense. She carried the ball to the end line before sending a low cross into the box where junior winger Ellery Boeving (Howell, Mich./Howell) finished the job by sending the ball past the goalkeeper and gave Calvin the 1-0 lead.

For the rest of the half the middle of the field turned into a battle ground as both teams fought for possession and momentum. Freshman Bianca Juncaj (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) had a good look at goal in the 36th minute but a stellar save from the Thunder goalkeeper kept the score at 1-0 heading into halftime.

In the second half, goal scoring opportunities were hard to come by for both teams. The Knights best chances came when Boeving and sophomore Jordan Kerns (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) had back-to-back shots in the 53rd minute while junior Vivian Nagelkirk (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) had her shot saved off the cross bar in the 57th minute. On the other end of the field, the Calvin defense matched Trine intensity and did not allow any shots on goal in the second half.

By the time the horn sounded at the end of regulation the Knights had earned the hard fought 1-0 victory and extended their win streak to nine. Calvin outshot the Thunder 16-2 while racking up seven shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Aubree Lee (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) tallied two saves while recording her eighth clean sheet of the season and her seventh in a row.

COACHES COMMENTS: "We had a hard fought win tonight against a really good Trine team," said head coach Emily Ottenhoff. "I thought we moved the ball well with pace and created some good chances. We have to regroup quick for another really tough game this Saturday."

UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Saturday, October 17th when they travel to Holland, Michigan to take on rival Hope College. The match against the Flying Dutch is set to begin at 12 PM.
