GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The 10th-ranked Calvin University men's swimming and diving team returned to competition for the first time in the new year with a defeat to Wayne State University (WSU) in a Friday dual meet at Venema Aquatic Center.
WSU, ranked 14th in the most recent CSCAA NCAA II swim rankings, topped the Knights 136-104 in the final tally.
The meet opened with the 400 Medley Relay, where the Calvin 'A' relay of
Jackson Merkel (Grandville, Mich./Grandvile),
Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Ohio/Homeschool),
David Gabrielle (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and
Charles Platt (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) finished second in a time of 3:24.39. The Calvin 'B' relay of
Antoine Douguet (Paris, France/Ecole Diagonale),
Josh Krampe (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern),
Benjamin Wichart (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint) and
Zachary Logan (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) took third in 3:32.23.
The first Calvin individual win of the meet came from
Carter Detweiler (Farmington Hills, Mich./Council Rock North) in the 200 Freestyle, where he finished in a time of 1:43.21 to score his first ever collegiate first-place finish.
Andrew Stimpert (Normal, Ill./Normal West) took second place in the event in 1:45.3.
Kellen Morford (Medina, Ohio/Medina) also earned his first collegiate win thanks to a 21.44 time in the 50 Freestyle, topping Logan in second place (21.62) and
Will Bales (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Everett) and
Daniel Miller (Arlington, Texas/Arlington) in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Platt won the 100 Freestyle in a time of 45.2, with Detweiler, Morford and
Henry Phippen (Macomb, Ill./Phippen Academy) in the top five, and Merkel followed that race by winning the 100 Backstroke in 50.81.
Alex Ketrow (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington) was the final individual winner of the day, taking the 100 Breaststroke followed by
Logan Yakubowski (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton Area) and
Evan Nelson (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) in the top three.
Ryan Halberg (Novi, Mich./Northville) recorded fourth-place finishes in both the 1000 Freestyle and 500 Freestyle events.
Evan Haney (Goshen, Ind./Northridge) took third in the 400 Individual Medley. Wichart was the top Calvin swimmer in the 100 Butterly in third place.
To finish the day, the Knights' 'A' 200 Freestyle Relay team of Platt, Logan, Gabrielle and Morford took second in 1:24.45, followed by the 'B' relay of Bales, Detweiler, Phippen and Wichart in third in a time of 1:26.7.
In the three-meter diving competition,
Miles Lee (Chicago, Ill./Homeschool) finished fourth with 155.47.
COACH'S COMMENT: "Some good reps in the pool after our training trip to get back into the swing of some competition," Calvin head coach
Dan Gelderloos said. "We had a couple people pop today, which was nice. I think the team has definitely made some strides in a lot of different areas that will eventually show up on the scoreboard soon."
NEXT UP: Calvin swimming and diving will return to action on Saturday, January 17, when it competes in a dual meet at University of Chicago at 1:00 PM (CT).
