Calvin Men’s Basketball Comeback Falls Short at Albion in 73-69 Defeat

ALBION, Mich. – The 18th-ranked Calvin University lost 73-69 on the road at Albion College on Saturday.

Albion (11-8, 4-4 MIAA) led for most of the game and held an early 20-12 lead before Calvin (13-6, 5-3 MIAA) came back to take a 25-24 with under four minutes left in the half.

The Knights still led 29-28 with under one minute to play in the half, but the Britons made a pair of free throws and then banked in a three-pointer right before the halftime buzzer sounded to take a 33-29 lead into the locker room at the break.

Jalen Overway (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) led Calvin with 10 points at the half, while Zion Ruckard (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest/St. Thomas Aquinas) scored nine big points for the Knights off the bench to keep the game within striking distance.

After closing the first half on a 5-0 run, the Britons opened the second half by scoring the first nine points to take a 42-29 lead. Albion took its biggest lead of the game (15) with 14:29 to play with the score 48-33 before the Knights began the chip away.

Over the next six minutes, Calvin went on a 21-9 run that cut the deficit to 57-54 with 8:28 to play and then cut the deficit down to one(65-64) with 2:29 to play. After four straight free throws pushed Albion's lead back to five, Overway cut the deficit back to one (69-68) with just under 30 seconds remaining. The Knights pressured for a steal, but the Britons were solid with the ball and made four straight free throws to ice the game and finish off the win.

After scoring 10 points in the first half, Overway added 23 points on 7-10 shooting and went 9-9 from the free throw line in the second half to give him 33 points and eight rebounds for the game. For the game, Overway shot 11-17 from the field and 11-14 from the charity stripe while drawing 11 Albion fouls. His 33 points marked the fifth time this season the junior center has scored at least 30 points in a game.

While Overway was scoring inside, the Knights struggled from the outside and finished 5-24 from beyond the three-point arc. The Britons made eight of 16 from downtown on the other end and shot 44.9 percent from the field for the game.

Ruckard was the lone Calvin player to join Overway in double figures and finished with 11 points off the bench.  Brady Ewing (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey) added six points and seven rebounds off the bench and made two of the Knights' five three-pointers.

NEXT UP: Calvin men's basketball will return to action on Wednesday, February 4, when it hosts Adrian College in a game scheduled to start at 7:30 PM at Van Noord Arena.
