PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The 18
th-ranked Calvin women's swimming and diving team upset No. 12 Carnegie Mellon Saturday in dual meet action. Calvin won the competition, outscoring Carnegie Mellon 178.5-120.5 The Knights are now 4-3 in dual meet competition with all three of the defeats coming against either nationally-ranked or NCAA Division II competition.
Calvin had several strong performances throughout Saturday's competition.
The Knights opened the meet by going 1-2 in the 200 medley relay. Its relay team of junior
Emma Merkel (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS), junior
Elise Bajwa (Bethesda, Md./Brookewood School), senior
Elyse Radawski (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) and senior
Meghan Bengelink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) took first place in a time of 1:44.81. Calvin's team of senior
Madi McNearney (Riverside, Mo./Park Hill South HS), sophomore
Gracie Ganger (Tipp City, Oh./Tippercanoe), freshman
Holly VanderWeele (San Antonio, Tx/Great Hearts Monte Vista North) and sophomore
Ella Andrews (Carmel, Ind./Heritage Christian HS) took second in 1:47.64.
Merkel had a big day, leading a 1-3-4 Calvin finish in the 200 freestyle. She won the race in 1:54.17 with sophomore
Maria Heeres (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) third (1:57.91) and VanderWeele fourth (1:59.67). Calvin went 2-3 in the 200 backstroke with Merkel placing second (2:05.53) and McNearney third (2:10.27).
Sophomore
Zoe Poe (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette Twp.) was victorious in her home state. She led a 1-2 Calvin finish in the 1,000 freestyle, taking first in 10:23.59 while freshman
Avery Russell (Battle Creek, Mich./Battle Creek Lakeview HS) was second (11:00.60). Poe won the 500 freestyle in 5:07.09 with Russell third (5:22.79). Poe added a second place swim in the 200 IM (2:11.69) with McNearney fifth (2:17.47).
Bajwa captured the 100 breaststroke with a winning time of 1:03.82 while Ganger was second (1:07.62). The time by Bajwa was an NCAA III B' cut qualifying time. Bajwa then completed the double, taking first in the 200 breaststroke with a winning time of 2:24.54 with Ganger second (2:25.77).
Andrews led a 1-2-4 Calvin finish in the 50 freestyle, winning the race in 24.14 with Bengelink second (24.21) and Radawski fourth (24.67). Andrews also led a 1-2-4-5 Calvin finish in the 100 freestyle, winning in 52.81 with Bengelink second (53.25), Heeres fourth (54.37) and VanderWeele fifth (54.93).
Radawski took second in the 100 butterfly (58.06). Senior
Elizabeth Dylewski (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Bloomfield Hills HS) was fourth in the 200 butterfly (2:18.24) with sophomore

Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of Bajwa, Bengelink, Andrews and Merkel took first in 1:35.13 with the Calvin relay team of Radawski, VanderWeele, Heeres and senior
Kristin Winkle (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking second (1:38.89).
Calvin went 2-3-4-5 in the one-meter diving competition. Junior
Veronica Skipper (Chicago, Il./Northside College Prep) took second with a season-best (six dives) score of 271.80 with junior
Leah Schouten (St. Davids, Ontario Eden) third (168.38), sophomore Kylie Greiser (Ida, Mich./Ida HS) fourth (155.84) and sophomore
Ellie Hanson (Walker, Mich./Kenowa Hills HS) fifth (143.77). Calvin went 1-2-3-4 on the three-meter board with Schipper winning the competition with a score of 241.90. Schouten was second (232.28), Greiser third (179.90) and Hanson fourth (149.40).
NEXT UP: Calvin will close out its dual meet campaign next Friday when it hosts rival Hope in a 4:30 p.m. dual meet at the Venema Aquatic Center.
