GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Tonight, the Calvin women's basketball team welcomed the No. 25 ranked Thunder of Trine to Van Noord Arena for a MIAA match up. Despite getting out to a fast start the Thunder came from behind to defeat the Knights 46-40. After today's game the Knights moved to a 9-8 overall record and 4-4 record in conference play.
Â
Calvin started the game hot as
RyAnn Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington),
Anna Fernandez (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy), and
Katelyn LaRue (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) all made early shots to give the Knights a quick 8-0 lead. Trine called an early timeout to try and slow Calvin's growing momentum but a 3-pointer from
Sami DeKuiper (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) one minute later only extended the Knights' lead.
Â
On the defensive side of the ball, Calvin put the clamps on the Thunder offense and forced them to settle for shots late in the shot clock. The Knights kept Trine off-balance and held the Thunder scoreless until just nineteen seconds remained in the first quarter when Sophie Gesell converted a single free throw to make the score 15-1.
Â
The second quarter proved to be a low scoring affair for both teams as Trine outscored the Knights 9-6 and Calvin headed into halftime with a 21-10 lead. As the second half got underway Trine seemed to find its groove as it shot 43.8 percent from the field in the third quarter while also going 2-3 from beyond the arc. Rohrer, Fernandez, and
Lydia Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) were the only Knights to score in the third as the Thunder outscored Calvin 16-6 and cut the Knights lead to just one point.
Â
Forty-five seconds into the fourth quarter Trine took its first lead of the game as it climbed into the driver's seat and never looked back. The Thunder outscored the Knights 20-13 in the fourth quarter as the Knights ultimately fell to Trine 46-40.Â
Â
Rohrer led the way for the Knights with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and two steals while Fernandez finished with 11 points. Sall recorded three blocks and
Chloe Wiegers (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) had a team high three assists.
Â
UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Saturday, January 21st when they welcome Hope College to Van Noord Arena for the 142nd edition of The Rivalry. Tip-off is set for 3 PM.
