Calvin Men's Swimming and Diving Drops Dual Meet at No. 4 Chicago

RESULTS

CHICAGO, Il. – The Calvin men's swimming and diving team traveled to the University of Chicago for a Saturday afternoon dual meet between two Division III nationally-ranked teams. No. 4 Chicago defeated No. 10 Calvin 190-110 in the meet. Calvin came up with several standout swims in the competition however.

Calvin opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay as the team of freshman Jackson Merkel (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS), senior Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Oh./Home Schooled), freshman David Gabrielle (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and senior Charles Platt (Downers Grove, Il./Downers Grove North HS) hit the wall with a winning time of 1:29.82.

Merkel claimed individual wins in the 100 and 200 backstroke events. He led a 1-3 Calvin finish in the 100 breaststroke with a winning time of 48.94 while Gabrille was third (52.10). Merkel led a 1-3 Calvin finish in the 200 backstroke, winning the race in 1:47.79 while senior teammate Ryan Halberg (Novi, Mich./Northville HS) was third (1:53.81).

Gabrielle led a 1-4 Calvin finish in the 100 butterfly, winning the race in 50.75 while sophomore teammate Andrew Taulbee (Reynoldsburg, Oh./Reynoldsburg HS) was fourth (51.58).

Platt had a pair of runners-up finishes, placing second in the 200 freest (1:40.93) and 100 free (45.37). Hallberg was third in the 200 free (1:42.11) and then led a 2-3-4 Calvin finish in the 200 IM, winning the race in 1:56.15 while freshman Evan Haney (Goshen, Ind./Northridge HS) was third (1:59.76) and freshman Antonine Douget (Paris, France/Ecole Diagonale) was fourth (2:01.88).

Gemmen was third in the 100 breaststroke (57.05) and fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:10.37).

Calvin went 2-4 in the 500 freestyle with junior Andrew Stimpert (Normal, Il./Normal West HS) second (4:50.10) and sophomore Alex Bergsma (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) fourth (4:57.49).

Haney was third in the 1,000 freestyle (9:58.16) while freshman Kellen Morford (Medina, Oh./Medina HS) was fourth in the 50 freestyle (21.46). Junior Benjamin Wichart (Lockport, NY/Starpoint HS) was fourth in the 200 butterfly (1:59.58).

Calvin went 3-4-5 on the one-meter diving board with sophomore Carson McIntire (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton HS) third (136.80), junior Addison Van Soelen (Lawrenceville, Ga./Providence Christian Academy) fourth (121.43) and senior Joshua Ring (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Christian HS) fifth (119.10). McIntire was third on the three-meter board (128.33) while Ring was fourth (127.13).

Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of Platt, Merkel, senior Zachary Logan (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center HS) and Morford took second in a time of 1:23.35.

COACHES COMMENT: "Team swam really well today on the road against great competition," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "We have a bunch of happy warriors! The energy was there from top to bottom of the lineup."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host the MIAA Invite #2 next Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
