Calvin University women's basketball player
Anna Fernandez (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) crossed the 1,000-career points milestone in Wednesday night's 64-45 victory over the Hornets of Kalamazoo.
Â
Fernandez recorded 12 points, five rebounds, and two steals against Kalamazoo to help boost the Knights to the win.
Â
With 6:20 left in the third quarter, the senior rose above a Hornets defender and nailed a 3-pointer to push herself over the 1,000-career points threshold. She is the 19th player in program history to score at least 1,000 points and the last to do so since Gabby Timmer achieved it as a sophomore in 2020.Â
Â
"Anna represents the consummate Calvin athlete," said head coach
Mark Christner. "Fiercely competitive, kind hearted and operates with a life perspective that revolves around faith, family and personal growth. Anna has become an outstanding player due in part to her work ethic and her natural ability. 1k points in college is remarkable."Â
Â
After transferring to Calvin from Wheaton for her sophomore season Fernandez has established herself as a staple and leader on the Calvin women's basketball team. In her breakout season last year Fernandez averaged 14.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game while scoring 17 points and three triples in Calvin's first MIAA Tournament victory since 2015. After being named to the All-MIAA First Team Fernandez went on to compete with the Knights at the DIII NCAA Tournament (Calvin's first appearance since 2017) and was eventually named to the D3 Hoops All-Region Third Team.
Â
This season, Fernandez leads the Knights in scoring with 15.9 points per game and was named to the D3 Hoops All-America fifth team. She has played a key role in Calvin's two Top-10 victories this season including 11 points against No. 9 Wis.-Whitewater and 14 points against No. 6 Bowdoin.
Â
"Certainly, it is not a milestone achieved in a vacuum," Christner said. "I have enjoyed watching her play with other high-quality players here at Calvin. It has been a joy to coach her and we are looking forward to a great finish this season."
Â
The Knights currently hold a 9-6 overall record and a 4-2 record in MIAA play. Calvin will be back in action on Saturday, January 17th when they travel to take on Albion at 1 PM.
