Grand Rapids, MI – The Calvin University women's basketball will host Kalamazoo Wednesday night at Van Noord in a game that is presented by The DeNooyer Automotive Family. Opening tip is set for 7 p.m.
The Teams: Calvin and Kalamazoo. The Knights enter the game with an 8-6 overall record and a 3-2 MIAA mark. The Hornets enter the matchup with a 2-11 overall record and have a 1-3 MIAA mark. The teams met twice a year ago with Calvin winning 60-35 in Grand Rapids and 77-51 in Kalamazoo.
The Coaches: Mark Christner is in his 7th season as head coach of the Calvin men's basketball program. Christner arrived at Calvin in time for the 2019-20 season after previously serving as head men's basketball coach at Waynesburg University (nine years). Christner is a former Calvin men's basketball player and later served as an assistant coach with both the Calvin men's and women's basketball programs before taking the Waynesburg head men's basketball coaching position in 2010. Earlier this season, Christner recorded his 100
th victory as Calvin women's basketball coach. Kalamazoo is led by head coach Ryan Clark who is in his third year as Kalamazoo head women's basketball coach. A Kalamazoo College graduate, Clark was a standout player on the Kalamazoo College men's basketball team. He later served as head women's and also head men's basketball coach at Alma College before returning to his alma mater in the summer of 2023.
The Players: The Knights are led in scoring and rebounding by senior
Anna Fernandez who averages 16.3 points and 5.0 rebounds a game. She scored a career-high 30 points in a loss at Alma last Wednesday night. Senior forward
RyAnn Rohrer averages 10.9 points and 7.9 rebounds a game with junior
Katelyn LaRue averaging 8.6 points a game. Kalamazoo is led in scoring by junior guard Ruby Hogan. Also a standout women's soccer player, Hogan averages 12.0 points and 7.5 rebounds a game. Senior Lauren VanderStelt averages 10.0 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.3 blocks a game.
