ADRIAN, Mich. – The 16th-ranked Calvin University men's basketball team put together its most efficient offensive performance of the season in a 92-68 win at Adrian College on Saturday.
Calvin (10-3, 2-0 MIAA) set new season highs for points (92) and field goal percentage (63.6 percent) while shooting 11-23 from three-point range. The Knights never trailed and led by as many as 27 points after taking a 10-point lead into halftime.
Jalen Overway (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) was dominant on the offensive end from the start, scoring 22 points on 8-8 shooting from the field in the opening half, including making both of his attempts from beyond the three-point arc. The Knights shot 7-14 from distance in the first half, with Overway making two and
Brady Ewing (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey) making three big three-pointers off the bench for nine points at the break.
The Knights led from the opening minute and shot 60.7 percent from the field, but Adrian (4-9, 1-1 MIAA) trailed only 47-37 at the half thanks to 14-15 shooting from the free throw line as the Knights committed 11 first-half fouls and were outscored 14-6 from the charity stripe.
The Bulldogs cut the Calvin deficit to nine (49-40) in the first minute of the second half, but that would be as close as Adrian would get the rest of the way as the Knights quickly pushed their lead back into double figures and never looked back. A pair of
Zion Ruckard (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest/St. Thomas Aquinas) free throws pushed the Calvin lead to 19 (63-44) with 13:34 remaining, and free throws from
Trevin Winkle (McBain, Mich./Northern Michigan Christian) extended the lead over 20 points (81-60) with under six minutes remaining to help the Knights put the game away.
After shooting 60.7 percent in the first half, the Knights shot 66.7 percent in the second half while holding Adrian to 37.5 percent for the half and 36.2 percent for the game.
Calvin dominated in the paint, outscoring the Bulldogs 44-20 and got big contributions from the reserve unit as the Knights' bench outscored their Bulldog counterparts 28-15 with the help of a career-high 12 points from Ewing on 4-5 shooting from beyond the arc.
Overway tied a season high with 30 points on 12-15 shooting and led all players with nine rebounds to go with three assists, two steals and one block. Overway bumped his career scoring total to 1,383 points, moving past Mickey Phelps and into 12th place on the Calvin career scoring list.
Winkle added 12 points for Calvin, while
Parker Swartz (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview/Ohio Dominican) recorded a team-high six assists to go with eight points.
COACH'S COMMENT: "Good road win," Calvin head coach
Bill Sall said. "I thought Adrian did a great job of pressuring us in the first half and making things difficult in the half court. I thought we responded well in the second half and played a little cleaner and stopped fouling so much. Great game by Jalen and awesome to see
Brady Ewing go 4-5 from three. Was really nice to see our bench play well. We will need that to continue."
NEXT UP: Calvin men's basketball will return to action on Wednesday, January 14, when it travels to Kalamazoo College for a game scheduled to tip off at 7:00 PM.
