DE PERE, Wisc. – Calvin picked up its second straight victory, defeating St. Norbert College 1-0 on a wind-swept Friday afternoon.
The Knights were able to navigate high gusts of wind near the shores of Green Bay with short concise passing while using a strong press to gain possession of the ball.
The press paid off in the 30
th minute as sophomore
Colin Nieuwenhuis (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) forced an errant St. Norbert pass with a tight pressing attack. The wayward pass landed on the feet of junior
Matt Torrell (Webster, N.Y. / The Charles Finney School) who glided through the center and curled in a 20-yard shot that bent around the goalkeeper and into the back of the net for the only goal of the game. The goal was the third of the year for Torrell with Nieuwenhuis drawing an assist on the play.
Calvin (2-1-0) continued to hold possession of the ball throughout the remainder of the first half and into the second half. Nieuwenhuis had a pair of shots early in the second half that forced saves from St. Norbert goalkeeper Jackson Kiszka. Senior
Jonah Meyer-Crothers (Sylvania, Oh./Sylvania Northview HS) added another in the opening 20 minutes of the second that forced a Kiszka save.
Freshman
Odis Fickell (Holland, Mich./Holland HS) nearly doubled the Calvin lead in the 70
th minute. Fickel was able to run onto a lead pass near the right side of the six-yard box and crank a shot headed for the far post. Kiszka was able to make a leaping stab, deflecting the shot wide to keep the match 1-0.
St. Norbert (0-3-0) launched three shots at goal inside the final 15 minutes but all three shots were wide as Calvin secured the shutout win.
Calvin finished the match with a 17-5 shots at goal advantage. Kiszka had seven saves in net for St. Norbert. Calvin senior goalkeeper
Zac Moore (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown HS) went the distance in goal for Calvin to secure the clean sheet and victory.
