- The Lead-Up – Calvin heads into season two under head coach Trent Figg. The Knights went 2-8 in their inaugural 2024 campaign, defeating Oberlin and Anderson for the first two program wins. Calvin features a 116-man roster that includes nine individuals that earned at least on starting assignment on offense and nine individuals that did the same on defense for the Knights in 2024. Calvin must replace graduated starting quarterback Chase Bradman who threw for over 2,200 yards last fall along with 20 touchdown passes. Calvin does return its top two receivers in sophomores Luke Michmerhuizen (45 receptions/667 yards/5 TDS) & Hunter Hogan (45 receptions/470 yards/5 TDs). It also returns its top two tacklers from a year ago in sophomore linebackers Trevor Martens (86 tackles) and Carson Schurstein (80 tackles). Martens was a member of the 2024 All-MIAA Second Team. In addition, Calvin returns sophomore punter Logan Nap (35.87 ypk) and sophomore placekicker Sal Ruffino (11-17 FG/30-31 PAT) with Ruffino also earning All-MIAA Second Team honors in 2024.

- The Calvin Coach-Head coach Trent Figg was hired on January 6, 2023. He is a native of Chillicothe, Missouri, located an hour-and-a-half from Kansas City. He is a 2008 graduate of William Jewell College where he was a four-year member of the football program as a special teams ace and defensive back. He later earned his master's degree from Northwest Missouri State in 2013. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at (then NAIA) William Jewell and later had stints as the special teams coordinator and defensive coordinator at D2 Southern Arkansas, defensive coordinator at William Jewell and special teams coordinator at Missouri State. He later spent two years (2019-21) at the University of Hawaii, serving as chief of staff of the football program and later associate head coach. In 2022, he serve as the lead offensive analyst for the University of Oregon football program under head coach Dan Lanning. Figg and Lanning are former teammates and roommates at William Jewell College and stood up for each other at their respective weddings.

- A Look at the Oberlin Coach – The Yeoman are under the leadership of head coach John Pont who is in his third year as head coach of the Oberlin program. He guided the Yeoman to a 1-9 mark last fall and is 2-18 in his coaching career at Oberlin. Pont previously served as a lead offensive analyst at the University of Indiana from 2021-2022. Prior to that, he was the offensive coordinator at the University of Chicago. He also has assistant coaching experience at Case Western Reserve, Miami University (Oh.), Yale, Northwestern and Mount St. Joseph, Akron, Colorado State, University of North Texas, Florida State and North Alabama. He is a 2007 graduate of Miami University (Oh.) and later earned a master's degree from Florida State in 2009. His grandfather – also named John Pont – was the head football coach at the University of Indiana from 1965-1972 and led the Hoosiers to their only Rose Bowl berth back in 1967.

- More on Oberlin - Senior quarterback Drew Nye is back in his third season as Oberlin's starting signal caller. Nye threw for 1,029 yards and 6 touchdown passes in 2024.. Nye returns his leading receiver from a year ago in senior Connor Steele who snared 22 balls for 345 yards and a touchdown in 2024. Senior linebacker Hunter Green returns after leading Oberlin with 103 tackles. Green is a team co-captain along with senior offensive lineman Michael Mathis.

- Oberlin Football History Snap Shot – Oberlin's first year of collegiate football was 1891. In 1892 and 1894, Oberlin's head coach was John Heisman of which the Heisman Trophy was renamed by the Downtown Athletic Club in 1936 shortly after his death. During its early years, Oberlin competed against larger institutions such as the University of Michigan and The Ohio State University. Oberlin is the last in-state school from Ohio to defeat Ohio State in football. Oberlin was a founding member of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) in 1902. In 1985, Oberlin helped found the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) of which it remains a member of today.

- Last Year's Meeting – Calvin defeated Oberlin 50-6 at Eagles Stadium September 7, 2024. The game took place on the campus of Grand Rapids Christian High School and marked the first-ever game for the Calvin football program. Calvin rolled up more than 420 yards on offense while its defense limited Oberlin to 145 yards of total offense while turning the Yeoman over three times. Calvin scored the first points in program history on a first quarter safety. Hunter Hogan scored the first touchdown in program history, grabbing a 28-yard touchdown strike from Chase Bradman. The touchdown was the first of two touchdown grabs by Hogan. Luke Michmerhuizen would later grab a two-yard touchdown pass. Freshman Jackson Cook had a four-yard touchdown reception. Freshman Hayden Slegers had a nine-yard touchdown run and freshman defensive back Noah Funk a 29-yard fumble recovery that turned into a scoop and score touchdown. Drew Nye led Oberlin offensively, going 15 of 33 for 117 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, Brandon Hall had 15 tackles for Oberlin while Hunter Green and James Chikwe had 10 tackles apiece. Charlie Garbowski had nine tackles for Calvin with Trevor Martens coming up with seven stops. Â

- NCAC Preseason Poll – Oberlin was picked to finish ninth in the nine-team NCAC pre-season conference poll. DePauw was picked as the NCAC pre-season favorite.

- MIAA Preseason Poll – Calvin was picked to finish seventh out of eight teams in the 2025 MIAA preseason poll with champion Alma selected as the MIAA's pre-season favorite and defending MIAA champion Hope picked a close second.Â

- A Look at Calvin – Once again, Calvin features one of the younger rosters in America this fall as the Knights feature 38 freshmen and 67 sophomores as part of their 116-man roster. 13 players feature from other states including Illinois (4), Texas (2),  California (1), Louisiana (1), Tennessee (1), North Carolina (1), Florida (1), New Mexico (1) and New York (1) with the remaining 103 coming from Michigan.

- The Quarterback Room – Sophomore transfer Thomas Vaccaro has been selected to start at quarterback on Saturday with sophomore Drake Irwin his backup. Vaccaro is a transfer from Samford University (Ala.) where he spent two years which included a redshirt season. He is a graduate of Christ Presbyterian Academy in Nashville, Tennessee. Irwin is a local product out of Rockford High School. He appeared in five games in 2024, completing 7 of 9 passes with one touchdown. At Rockford High School, he led the Rams to a Division I District Title his senior year. Also listed at quarterback are true freshmen Beau Harris and Amari Powell.

- Receiving Unit – The Calvin starting receiver unit features a strong West Michigan flavor as Luke Michmherhuizen (Holland Christian), Seth Anderson (Rockford) and Jude Klunder (Grand Rapids Christian HS) are listed as starters today. Sophomore Hunter Hogan (Ravenna HS) will also see receiving looks out of the backfield. Sophomores Shamar White (East Kentwood HS) and McCoy Baxter (Rockford HS) are listed as key backups.The 6-7 Michmerhuizen is the second member of his immediate family to be a Calvin varsity athlete as his older sister Nicole was a multiple All-American for the Calvin women's track and field team including a national champion in the 10,000 meter run in 2013.

- Multi-Sport Standouts – The Calvin roster features several players who were multi-sport standouts in high school. Sophomore running back Hunter Hogan played football, soccer and ran track and field at Ravenna High School. Sophomore running back Hayden Slegers played football, soccer (winter in California) and baseball. Sophomore quarterback Drake Irwin was a starting guard at Rockford High School in addition to playing football. Sophomore linebacker Gabe Amid played football, wrestling and competed in track and field at Zeeland East. Isaiah Luk and KJ Harp both wrestled at the heavyweight position in high school in addition to playing football. Luke Michmerhuizen was a starting forward at Holland Christian High School in addition to football as was Hugo Vander Waal at Hudsonville Unity Christian.Â

- OK-Red Flavor – The Calvin football team has a strong representation from the Ottawa-Kent (OK) Red Conference as Rockford (Seth Anderson, Drake Irwin, Mike Liggett, Jonah Carlson, McCoy Baxter, Gavin Currie), Jenison (Zaiden Chirco, Rowan Stewart, Colin Diekman, Trevor Martens) and East Kentwood (KJ Harp, ShaMar White, Breylon Cox, Kenji Nou, Gabe Wolf), Grand Haven (Logan Minier) and Grandville (Aven Kaat) are all represented on the Calvin roster with a total of 17 O K Red alumni.

- Classroom Distinction – The 2025 Calvin football team features 17 individuals were named to the 2024-25 MIAA Academic Honor Roll for maintaining a 3.50 grade point average or above for the entire academic year while earning a varsity letter. Those 17 individuals include: Paul Bouma, Peter DeKruyter, Colin Diekman, Tate Dohm, Ben Ernstes, Noah Funk, Andrew Helmus, Drake Irwin, Brady Jacobs, Caden Kolanowski, Peter Markvluwer, Trevor Martens, Luke Michmerhuizen, Micah Pobursky, Hayden Slegers, Conner Smits and Brayden Steinbacher.

- Transfer Portal – Calvin has nine players that have transferred over from other collegiate football programs. Those nine individuals are senior Jair Nowlin (Greenville University), senior Charlie Garbowski (Finlandia University), junior Alex Minnehan (Grand Valley State), junior C.J. Sheets (Davenport University), junior Sam Gallo (Concordia, Mich.), sophomore Wyatt Young (Saginaw Valley State University), sophomore Thomas Vaccaro (Samford University), sophomore Tyler Porte (Central Michigan University) and sophomore Carter Bylsma (Dordt University).

- Just for Kicks – Calvin's lead kicker is redshirt sophomore Sal Ruffino out of Cadillac, Michigan backed up by sophomore Logan Nap from Lawton, Michigan. Nap is also the lead punter and is backed up by sophomore Drake Irwin.

- Whitehall Claims First Dibs – The first recruit to commit to the Calvin University football program was redshirt freshman Winton Napier who is slated to start at left tackle. Napier is one of four graduates of Whitehall High School on the Calvin roster joined by sophomore linebacker Trenton TenBrock, sophomore linebacker Jackson Cook and freshman offensive lineman Connor Nash.

- A Look Ahead – Calvin will host Concordia University (Wisc.) next Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Calvin Soccer Stadium. The contest will be the first of five home football games for the Knights this fall at the facility with Kalamazoo (Sept. 27), Adrian (Oct. 18), Trine (Oct. 25) and Olivet (Nov. 1) also coming to Calvin this fall.
