GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University men's soccer team overcame a one-goal deficit with three goals in the final nine minutes to earn a 3-1 win over DePauw University on Homecoming Saturday.
DePauw (5-2-2) took an early 1-0 lead in the 35th minute to take a 1-0 lead into halftime and looked to be in control of the game through the 80-minute mark.
Things would change in an instant for Calvin (7-1-0) in the 82nd minute on a set piece when
Hans Pruis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) headed home a
Josh Little (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) corner kick to tie the match 1-1 with 8:29 remaining.
The Knights seized on that momentum in the minutes that followed, controlling possession until sophomore back
Jake Ziolo (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) put the ball through a defender's legs just outside the 18-yard box before ripping a shot off his left foot into the far top corner to give the Knights a 2-1 edge with 3:33 remaining.
With the Tigers pressing for an equalizer in the final minute and the keeper well across midfield,
Osiel Peguero (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) won the ball from the keeper at midfield and dribbled all the way in for a breakaway goal with 12 seconds left to secure the final result.
The Knights were held without a shot on goal in the first half, but recorded five in the second half while also winning six corners after the break.
The goals for Pruis and Ziolo were the second of the season for both players, while Peguero's was the first of the season.
Zac Moore (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown/UMBC) stopped two of the three shots he faced in goal for Calvin.
COACH'S COMMENT: "Wow. Wasn't great for long spells and certainly wasn't pretty, but the guys found a way," Calvin head men's soccer coach
Ryan Souders said. "DePauw are a good team and we lacked focus and intensity for much of that match so as you can imagine, very happy with how we finished it off.
"What a header by Hans. Just rising up to smash it home off a great ball from Josh. And
Jake Ziolo. Ninety minutes on some of the hottest conditions imaginable but saved his best for late. What a gritty goal. And for Osiel to seal it the way he did was just great.
"As always an incredible thank you to Knight Nation. Absolutely incredible and life giving today. Go Knights!"
NEXT UP: Calvin men's soccer will return to action in non-conference play when it travels to Lake Forest College on Wednesday, October 1, for a 4:30 PM (CT) start.
