Calvin Men's Soccer Team Cut Down by Foresters

LAKE FOREST, Il. – Calvin's seven-game win streak came to an end on Wednesday at the 17th-ranked Knights were cut down 3-0 by the homestanding Foresters of Lake Forest.

Lake Forest (10-0-0) stunned the Knights (7-2-0) with a cracking goal in the sixth minute of play. Peter Cirbo of Lake Forest received a pass in the midfield and from distance whipped a shot hide-side past Calvin goalkeeper Zac Moore (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown HS) for a 1-0 Forester lead.

Calvin pressed for the equalizer but a shot in the 19th minute from the left side of the six-yard box by junior Matt Torrell (Rochester, NY/The Charles Finney School) was saved by Lake Forest keeper Kyle Demmon.

Calvin nearly tied the match in the opening minutes of the second half but a blast from the left wing by sophomore Bennett Quijano (Canton, Mich./Salem) clattered off the crossbar.

The Knights forced three successive saves from substitute Lake Forest goalkeeper Conor Leuschke between the 51st and 60th minute with strong pressure. The Foresters then counterattacked and found the back of the net against the run of play on a header by Finn Gruver that beat Moore at the far post after Cirbo had lofted a well-placed cross into the box.

Lake Forest put the capper on the contest with a well-played one-two combination between Gio Diaz and Nathan Kostovetsky that left Moore little chance for a save as Kostovetsky poked in a shot into a wide-open net for a 3-0 lead.

Calvin enjoyed large portions of possession and outshot Lake Forest 11-5 but came up on the short end of the scoreline.

COACHES COMMENT: "Certainly a disappointing result," said Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Hopefully we learned today that maybe we aren't as good as we thought we were and that we have a long way to go. Credit to Lake Forest on executing their game plan and getting the win. Still absolutely love this group. Love who we are and where we can go. We just need to learn together, commit to growing, and work towards creating positive outcomes moving forward."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host Olivet on Saturday at 5 p.m. in a game that will be a non-conference match.
