PELLA, Iowa – The Calvin University women's volleyball team closed the two-day tournament hosted by Central College with a pair of wins on Saturday.
The Knights defeated the hosts from Central 3-1 (21-25, 25-16, 25-16, 28-26) before closing the tournament with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-10) sweep of Buena Vista University.
Match 1
Calvin (2-1) overcame a first-set defeat to win the next three sets on the way to a 3-1 win over Central (1-2).
The Dutch started quickly out of the gates on the way to taking the opening set 25-21, but Calvin responded to win the second set 25-16 to even the match at 1-1.
The Knights fell behind early in the third set but rattled off eight straight points on the serve of
Lina Kasuboski (Racine, Wis./Union Grove) to take control and build a 2-1 lead.
The two teams traded blows back and forth in a fourth set that featured 14 ties and five lead changes, but Calvin finally wrestled control late with three straight points, capped by a service ace from
Jordan Steen (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) to close the match.
Aerin Baker (Saugatuck, Mich./Saugatuck) led Calvin with 20 kills for the match while
Sarah Bradley (Village of Clarkston, Mich./Everest Collegiate) recorded 13 kills and hit .423 on the attack.
Tryna Vander Zwaag (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian) led the Knights with 15 digs.
Match 2
The Knights closed the day and the tournament on a strong note with a 3-0 sweep of Buena Vista (1-2).
Calvin took the opening set 25-22 and got better as the match progressed on the way to winning the second set 25-18 and the third set 25-10 to seal the win.
The Knights hit .282 on the attack for the match, including a blistering .400 efficiency in the third set while holding the Beavers to -.235 efficiency in the final game.
Baker once again led the Calvin attack with 12 kills, followed by Bradley with eight.
Caralee Schipper (Toronto, Ontario/Strathroy District Collegiate Institute) finished with three kills and three blocks to lead a Calvin front row that recorded seven blocks.
Delaney Kemp (Frisco, Texas/Frisco Centennial) led the Knights with 14 assists and three service aces.
NEXT UP: Calvin women's volleyball returns to action on Friday, September 5, when it plays in the two-day MIAA/NCAC Challenge at Ohio Wesleyan University. Calvin opens the tournament with a match against Wittenberg University on Friday, followed by a pair of matches against Ohio Wesleyan and Denison University on Saturday, September 6.
