Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Today the Calvin women's soccer team kicked off their 2025 season at Zuidema Field with a commanding 2-0 win over Wartburg.
Â
In the first half, both teams had scoring opportunities early on as they battled for an advantage. In the thirteenth minute, junior
Avery Mrozinski (Milford, Mich./Milford) found herself on the receiving end of a cross and redirected the ball toward the bottom right corner of the net. Unfortunately, for the Knights the outstretched Wartburg keeper was able to get a finger on it at the last second and squashed Calvin's scoring opportunity.
Â
Wartburg responded with a nice look of their own later in the half when they sent a soaring ball towards the top of the goal. However, senior goalkeeper
Kalex Dodge (Leslie, Mich./Leslie) rose to the occasion and tipped the ball away to keep the score even at 0-0.
Â
It wasn't until the thirty-eighth minute that Calvin got their next opportunity and this time they took advantage. After a quick cross into the eighteen-yard box senior
CeCe McCarthy (Ypsilanti, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) collected the loose ball and fired it into the back of the net to send Calvin into halftime leading 1-0.
Â
In the second half, Calvin gave themselves some breathing room in the seventy-third minute when
Katherine Bergman (Farmington Hills, Mich./Farmington) sent a bending corner kick into the six-yard box. The ball bounced into the air where freshman
Alexa Boersma (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian) rose above Wartburg defenders and put her head on it and sent it past the keeper to record her first collegiate goal.
Â
For the rest of the half Calvin continued to shine defensively as they kept Wartburg's chances to a minimum and picked up the 2-0 win in the season opener. Calvin outshot Wartburg 24-4 with 10 of those shots being on frame. In goal, Dodge finished the game with three saves and a clean sheet.
