GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Calvin opened its 2025 campaign on a losing note, falling to Milwaukee School of Engineering 5-1 Friday night at Calvin Soccer Stadium.
Calvin carried the pressure in the opening minutes, nearly scoring on a shot from the right side of the box. MSOE goalie Asher Harris had a leaping stab to thwart the scoring chance. Moments later MSOE punched back twice, scoring in the sixth and then again in the seventh minute of play to take a stunning 2-0 lead.
The visiting Raiders (1-0-0) added goals in the 18
th and 25
th minute to build a 4-0 lead. The Knights (0-1-0) broke through for a goal in the 30
th minute as junior
Matt Torrell (Webster, N.Y. /The Charles Finney School ) pounced on a rebound off a corner kick by senior
Jonah Meyer-Crothers (Sylvania, Oh./Sylvania Northview HS) and banged a shot inside the far post.
Trailing 4-1, Calvin pushed for another goal early in the second half but MSOE stymied the comeback bid with a goal in the in the 61
st minute off the foot of Nico Picha. The goal was Picha's second of the game.
MSOE finished with a 12-8 shots at goal advantage. Senior
Zac Moore (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown) had four saves in goal for the Knights.
