Calvin Men's Lacrosse Clips Kalamazoo to Get Back on Winning Track

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Playing on a snow-covered carpet, the Calvin men's lacrosse team claimed a 16-11 victory at Kalamazoo College Wednesday evening.

An early April snowstorm covered the MacKenzie Field turf with snow but the two MIAA foes carried on.

The two sides traded goals in the first quarter as they adjusted to the slippery footing. A goal from senior Joshua Moyer (Allentown, Pa. Allentown Central Catholic) in the closing seconds of the quarter tied the game 4-4.

Kalamazoo (6-4 overall, 1-2 MIAA) grabbed an early 5-4 second quarter goals but back-to-back goals by junior Braden Carpenter (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville HS) gave Calvin a 6-5 lead and the Knights never trailed again.

Senior Thomas Smith (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. Grosse Pointe South) gave Calvin an 8-6 second quarter lead and junior David Blackmon (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton North HS) scored in the final seconds of the quarter to give the Knights a 9-6 halftime lead.

Kalamazoo trailed just 11-10 after three quarters of play but Smith scored early in the fourth for a 12-10 Calvin lead. Kalamazoo again closed to within a goal at 12-11 before Blackmon ripped in a shot off a feed from Blackmon to put the Knights up 13-11. The goal by Blackmon ignited a 4-0 Calvin scoring run to close out the win.

Carpenter finished the game with five goals and two assists for his 12th collegiate hat trick including his seventh of the season. Smith also smashed in five goals to go with one assist. He now has 117 goals, 38 assists and 155 points, just 12 points behind second place on the Calvin career scoring list. Smith recorded his 18th career hat trick in the win.

Blackmon and senior Christian Coler (Ionia, N.Y. Honeyoye Falls-Lima) had two goals apiece. Coler now has 74 goals good for seventh on the Calvin career list. Moyer and sophomore Riley DeSarbo (Monroe, Mich./ St. Mary's Catholic Central) also scored goals. DeSarbo, sophomore Jordan Warners (Orange, Calif. Crean Lutheran) and freshman Colin TeBrake (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview HS) all had one assist. Senior Cole McKenney (Mission Viejo, Calif. Trabuco Hills) had three assists.

Junior Nate Hanson (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS) was a snow-blower in the faceoff circle, winning 23 of 29 faceoffs while collecting a game-high and career-high 17 ground balls. Sophomore Drew Garrison (Columbus, Ohio Worthington Kilbourne) came up with a career-high 10 ground balls. Senior Josh Gage (Columbus, Ohio Worthington Kilbourne) had six ground balls.

Senior Corgan Schaumburg (Rockton, Ill. Hononegah) came up with 14 saves and the win in goal.

COACHES COMMENT: "I'm so proud of the way the guys battled through adversity with the weather tonight," said Calvin head men's lacrosse coach Dave Hoger. "We played a great Kalamazoo team in some tough conditions and were able to come together and battle. We've been talking a lot recently about the joy in competing together and it was great to see us do just that tonight."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host Trine Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
