Calvin Men's Lacrosse Trips Up Trine in Saturday Night Thriller

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Calvin picked up a dramatic 13-12 victory over Trine University Saturday night to improve to 3-2 in conference play and move into fourth place in the MIAA standings.

Calvin (6-8 overall) received the game-winning goal from junior David Blackmon (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton North HS) with two seconds left in regulation to claim the victory.

The Knights led 5-1 after one quarter of play and 6-3 at halftime but Trine (11-3 overall, 1-2 MIAA) roared back with six third quarter goals to the game 9-9 heading into the final quarter of play.

Trine opened the scoring in the fourth quarter to build a 10-9 lead but senior Cole McKenney () whipped in a shot from the right wing off a feed from Blackmon to tie the game 10-10 with 10:37 left, setting up a frantic final 10 minutes of play.

Trine gained an 11-10 lead with 9:36 left on a goalmouth scrum. Blackmon tied the game at 11 off a feed from Cole McKenney with 5:59 left. Sophomore Riley DeSarbo (Monroe, Mich. St. Mary's Catholic Central) then got loose through the middle and got loose a shot from the center while receiving heavy contact and somehow bounced a shot in off the far post for a 12-11 Calvin lead.

The Knights were whistled for a 30-second penalty with under two minutes left and Trine made good use of the extra-man opportunity, whipping in a shot from the left point to tie the game at 12 with just 1:21 left.

Calvin won the ensuing faceoff and called timeout with 41 seconds remaining to set up a winning play. With time ticking down, Calvin junior Braden Carpenter (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville HS) turned the ball over while trying to make a play near the Trine goal but hustled quickly to regain the ball and did just that, making a leaping steal from behind near midfield off a Trine sideline pass. Carpenter was able to redirect the ball to sophomore Jordan Warners (Orange, Calif. Crean Lutheran) who drove the ball through the center and dumped a pass off to Blackmon on the right wing. Blackmon made a move to the net and fired a shot from a tight angle into the back of the net for the game-winner.

Blackmon finished the game with three goals and an assist. Cole McKenney had two goals and two assists. Senior Thomas Smith (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. Grosse Pointe South) scored two goals and was credited with three ground balls. Junior Nate Hanson (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS) had a goal, six ground balls and 14 faceoff wins. Senior August Bryan (Elburn, Ill. Marmion Academy) had a goal and four caused turnovers. Senior Christian Coler (Ionia, N.Y. Honeyoye Falls-Lima) had a goal and six ground balls. Carpenter had a goal, two assists and two caused turnovers. DeSarbo and freshman Colin TeBrake (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview HS) had one goal apiece.

Freshman Jackson Engbers (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) had four ground balls. Senior Josh Gage (Livonia, Mich. Detroit Catholic Central) had three ground balls. Senior goalie Corgan Schaumburg (Rockton, Ill. Hononegah) had six ground balls and 11 saves.

Calvin did well playing short-handed as Trine was just 1-5 on extra-man opportunities. As a team, Calvin was credited with 43 ground balls to Trine's 31.

COACHES COMMENT: "Tonight was a high-energy game!" said Calvin head men's lacrosse coach Dave Hoger. "Trine is a talented young team and we had to battle for every inch tonight. I was so proud of our guys and their tenacity and willingness to stay together through the ups and downs and continue to sacrifice for each other. David scored a great goal to seal the win, but it was Braden's effort after a turnover that made it possible. That's what this team can do when they play for each other and I'm so excited to get back to work and prepare for a huge game next Saturday."
