TIFFIN, Ohio – The Calvin University baseball team lost its midweek, non-conference game at Heidelberg University 10-6 on Tuesday.
Calvin (20-16) started strong with the help of a two-run home run by
Isaac Hubka (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) that gave the Knights a 3-0 lead, as well as three scoreless innings in an abbreviated start from
James Ross (Carmel, Ind./Carmel).
Heidelberg (15-23) got on the board with one run in the fourth and scored six times in the middle innings off Calvin relievers
Ethan DeBlecourt (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian/Spring Arbor) and
Ben Ferguson (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) to take a 6-3 lead through six innings.
The Knights answered with two runs in the seventh inning.
Christian Stevens (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon) started the scoring with an RBI-double and
Brock Savage (Sterling Heights, Mich./Sterling Heights Stevenson) followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 6-5.
That would be as close as Calvin would get the rest of the way, however, as Heidelberg added more runs in the seventh inning to help put the game out of reach.
Hubka finished with a big day at the plate to lead the Knights' offense, going 2-3 with his first career home run, a double, three runs batted in, one stolen base and one walk.
Ross went three innings in the start with three strikeouts and did not allow any baserunners.
NEXT UP: Calvin baseball is scheduled to return to action on Thursday, May 1, when it plays Hope College at LMCU Ballpark at 7:05 PM.
