Calvin Women's Lacrosse Breezes Past Kalamazoo to Advance in MIAA Tournament

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Today the Calvin women's lacrosse team welcomed the Hornets of Kalamazoo College to Zuidema Field for the first round of the MIAA Tournament.

The Knights wasted no time getting things rolling as senior Meghan Chang (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg) netted two goals within the first four minutes to give Calvin an early lead. Junior Audrey Booher (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian) added another goal a few seconds later before Kalamazoo looked to respond with a goal of their own.

However, Calvin dominated the rest of the first quarter as Morgan Bethard (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt), Jacey Smith (Watertown, Wis./Watertown), Delaney Johnson (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake), and Jessica Eenigenburg (Norton Shores, Mich./Western Michigan Christian) all got in the scoring action with five unanswered goals to take a commanding 8-1 lead.

In the second quarter, Kalamazoo tried to hang around as they broke through the Calvin defense to score three goals, but the Knights continued to dominate and added five goals to their total and headed into halftime with a 13-4 lead.

Calvin continued to put on a stellar offensive performance in the second half as they outscored the Hornets 8-3 and walked away with the 21-7 victory. The Knights outshot Kalamazoo 42-25 and forced the Hornets to turn the ball over 14 times.

Johnson finished as the Knights leading scorer with five goals while Booher chipped in four goals. Chang and Smith each had three goals while Alex Petrusha (Milford, Mich./Milford) recorded her first goal of the season.

Junior Natalie Scott (Dyer, Ind./Illiana Christian) led the team with three caused turnovers while sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Rizzo (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) recorded six saves.

COACHES COMMENTS: "I'm really proud of how the team played today," said head coach Blake Boehm. "They came out strong from the beginning and didn't let up. Our defense took control of their match ups and were relentless in their efforts. Offense played smart and shot often and accurate. We did a good job earning and protecting possessions the whole game."

UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Tuesday, April 28th when they travel to Trine for the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament.
