Calvin Men's Lacrosse Falls in MIAA Tournament 10-9

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University men's lacrosse team saw its season come to an end in a 10-9 defeat to Trine University in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament on Saturday at Zuidema Field.

Calvin (6-10) came out strong to start as David Blackmon (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) scored just over two minutes into the game, and goals from Thomas Smith (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) and Christian Coler (Ionia, N.Y./Honeyoye Falls-Lima) helped the Knights finish the first quarter with a 3-1 lead.

Trine (13-5) took control of the game in the second and third quarters, however, as the Thunder scored three times in the second quarter to take a 4-3 lead into halftime and the five of the first six goals of the second half to push their lead to 9-4 with under four minutes to play in the third quarter. After the quick start, turnovers proved costly in the middle two quarters as the Knights committed a combined 16 turnovers in the second and third periods.

The Knights would respond with a strong finish to the third quarter, scoring three unanswered goals (including two with the man advantage) as Coler, Joshua Moyer (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) and Cole McKenney (Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills) found the back of the net to cut the deficit to 9-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

Trine extended its lead to 10-7 with a goal early in the fourth, but Calvin cut the deficit to 10-9 thanks to the second goals of the game for both Smith and Moyer to trail by one with 8:29 remaining.

Calvin finished the fourth quarter with 11 total shots (nine on goal) and had opportunities in the final minutes to tie the game, but Trine goalie Luke Arnold came up with critical saves down the stretch, including one final stop on Jordan Warners (Orange, Calif./Crean Lutheran) with six seconds remaining to secure the win for the Thunder.

Coler led the Calvin offense with three goals and one assist to go with three ground balls. Smith and Moyer both finished with two goals apiece, while McKenney record two assists and six ground balls to go with his one goal. Nate Hanson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) led the Knights with 10 ground balls and finished 13-21 in the faceoff X.

Corgan Schaumburg (Rockton, Ill./Honogegah) recorded six saves in goal for Calvin and became the first Calvin goalie to record 500 saves for his career early in the contest.
