KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Calvin University men's tennis team lost 7-0 in a battle for first place at Kalamazoo College on Saturday.
Calvin (9-8, 3-2 MIAA) entered the day looking to create a three-way tie at the top of the MIAA standings, but could not get any momentum going as Kalamazoo (11-4, 5-0 MIAA) played well and earned the win.
The Hornets opened the match by taking the doubles point and a 1-0 overall lead by winning two of the three doubles matches. The Knights' number-two team of
Ryan Broek (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) and
Felipe Sartori (Estr. Basiléia/Colégio Giusto Zonzini) won 6-3, but the Hornets won the number-three match 6-2 and then earned a 7-6 (7-5) tiebreaker win against the number-one team of
Rodrigo Alipio (Santos, São Paulo, Brazil/COC Universitario) and
Mário Neto (Boa Vista, Brazil/Reino) to secure the point.
In singles, the Hornets completed the win thanks to four wins in straight sets.
Caleb Bartels (Belton, Mo./Kansas City Christian) lost his number-two singles match in a third-set tiebreaker (3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-2)). Neto also took his number-five singles match to a third-set tiebreaker but lost 4-6, 6-2, 1- (11-9).
