KENOSHA, Wis. – The Calvin University women's lacrosse team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end with a 13-9 defeat at Carthage College on Saturday.
Calvin (6-3) fell behind early as Carthage (8-1) scored in the opening two minutes but answered right back with four unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead.
Meghan Change (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg) and
Audrey Booher (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian) each scored twice for the Knights during the run.
The Firebirds got one goal back with 12 seconds remaining in the first quarter to cut the Calvin lead to 4-2 and then outscored the Knights 3-1 in the second quarter, including another late goal with 18 seconds left in the quarter to take a 6-5 lead into the break. Booher scored the Knights' second quarter goal to give her a first half hat trick.
Carthage continue to push early in the second half and scored the first four goals of the third quarter, but the Knights received goals from
Morgan Bethard (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) and
Corinne Plumb (St. Louis, Mo./Westminster Christian Academy) late in the third to cut their deficit to 10-7 heading into the fourth quarter.
Booher opened the fourth quarter with her fourth goal of the game with 13:56 remaining to cut the Carthage lead to 10-8, but that would be as close as the Knights would get the rest of the way as Carthage answered with the next three goals before
Jessica Eenigenburg (Norton Shores, Mich./Western Michigan Christan) finished the scoring late in the fourth for the Knights.
The two teams were nearly even in shots (30-29 Carthage advantage) and shots on goal (16-14 edge for Calvin), but the Knights committed 16 turnovers to eight for the Firebirds.
Booher led the Knights with four goals and two assists for six total points. Chang finished with two goals, one assist and six draw controls.
NEXT UP: Calvin returns to action on Wednesday, April 2, when it hosts North Central College (Ill.) in the Knights' final non-conference game of the season. That game is scheduled to start at 5:00 PM at the Zuidema Field.
