SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Calvin University women's tennis team closed the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 5-2 win at Spring Arbor University on Wednesday at Jones Tennis Complex.
Calvin (8-2) opened the match by taking the doubles point thanks to wins in the numbers two and three matches.
The number-two team of
Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) and
Ryan Morey (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) won 6-4, while the third team of
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) and
Rachel Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) won their match 6-2.
In singles, the top three matches went to third set tiebreakers, with Spring Arbor (6-11) winning two of the three. Holman lost her top seeded match 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8), and
Ana Clara Ornellas (Londrina, Brazil/Colegio Saber) lost in two-singles 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7).
Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) won her three-singles match in a tiebreaker 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-3), however, and
Marina Ribeiro (santos Sal Paolo, Brazil/Santa Cecilia) (6-2, 6-1), Hooker (6-3, 6-0) and Morey (6-1, 6-2) each won in straight sets to help secure the overall win.
