Calvin Softball Drops Two to DePauw on the Road

GREENCASTLE, Ind. - Today the Calvin softball fell to a 11-7 overall record as they dropped two to the Tigers of DePauw.

GAME 1
CALVIN 1, DEPAUW 9

In the first game of the day the Knights got off to a slow start as the Tigers of DePauw scored five unanswered runs to start the game. It wasn't until the top of the fifth inning when Calvin got a scoring opportunity when senior catcher Taylor Sanborn (Midland, Mich./Midland) got on base thanks to a Tigers defensive error.

Senior Sage Mougin (New Carlisle, Ind./New Prairie) entered the game as a pinch runner and was quickly moved into scoring position on third base after at bats from Kennedi Pepin (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley Bourbonnais) and Lily Gaastra (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian). Up next, Tory Decker (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) knocked a single back up the middle to score Mougin and make the score 5-1.

However, that would be the only run scored by Calvin in the game as DePauw continued to attack offensively and eventually walked away with the 9-1 win over the Knights in five innings.

In the circle, junior Brooke Hunderman (Grand Rapids, Mich./Calvin Christian) started the game for the Knights where she recorded four strikeouts before being relieved by senior Zoe Hazelhoff (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) in the fifth.

GAME 2
CALVIN 3, DEPAUW 4

In the second game, the Knights looked to bounce back as junior Carly Dole (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) started strong as she hit a shot back up the middle to score Aubrey Herder (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) and Valeria Frias (Wyoming, Mich./Potters House) in the top of the first inning.

The Tigers responded quickly as they scored a run of their own in the bottom of the inning before tacking on one in the third and one in the fifth to take the 3-2 lead.

In the top of the sixth inning, Dole singled to center field to give the Knights a base runner before Sanborn knocked an RBI double to left field to even the score at 3-3. However, the tie didn't last long as DePauw scored a run in the bottom of the inning to reclaim the lead and the momentum.

The Knights failed to get anything going in the top of the seventh inning as they ultimately fell to the Tigers 3-4.

Dole finished the game with two hits and two RBIs while Sanborn recorded two hits and one RBI. In the circle, junior Emma Ludema (Martin, Mich./Wayland) got the start where she recorded three strikeouts before being relieved by Hunderman in the sixth inning.

UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Wednesday, March 26th when they travel to take on the University of Chicago in a non-conference doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at 3PM (CST) and game two will start around 3PM (CST).
