GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University women's lacrosse team rolled to a 19-4 win over Illinois Wesleyan University on Wednesday at Zuidema Field.
Calvin (4-2) raced out to a 6-0 lead in the opening 11 minutes of the game and never looked back as the Knights finished with a 46-11 advantage in total shots and a 41-8 edge in shots on goal.
The Knights also controlled possession throughout, winning 15 of 25 draw controls and holding IWU (3-4) to 12-23 on clear attempts.
Delaney Johnson (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) started the scoring for Calvin 3:12 into the first quarter, and goals from
Audrey Booher (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian)
Jacey Smith (Watertown, Wis./Watertown),
Anneliese Hanson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) and two goals from
Morgan Bethard (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) followed to put the Knights in front 6-0.
The Titans answered with three unanswered goals to cut the Calvin lead to 6-3 with 11:51 remaining in the second quarter, but the Knights roared right back with seven unanswered goals to finish the first half to take a 13-3 lead into halftime.
Booher and
Meghan Chang (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg) started the 7-0 run with goals while the Titans were a man up. Johnson added two goals during the stretch, while Bethard, Chang and Smith added the other three.
Booher scored to start the third period with a man up advantage, and the Knights closed the game with five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to finish off the win. Chang scored twice in the fourth quarter and was joined in the scoring column by
Corinne Plumb (St. Louis, Mo./Westminster Christian Academy), Bethard and
Riley Cornwell (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian) in the quarter.
Chang and Bethard both finished with four goals and combined for five assists (three from Bethard and two from Chang). Booher finished with three goals and two helpers.
Hannah Rizzo (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) stopped four of the eight shots she faced in goal and added five ground balls. Smith also finished with five ground balls and caused two turnovers. Chang recorded four ground balls and five draw controls.

Blake Boehm said. "We had some very specific things we wanted to work on this week coming out of spring break. The team worked hard Monday and Tuesday and really stepped up their game. It was nice to see their commitment and dedication to a specific style of play pay off. We're excited to get back to work tomorrow in preparation for Baldwin Wallace."
