Calvin Baseball Topped by Manchester in Midweek Tune Up

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Calvin University baseball team lost its midweek non-conference game at Manchester University 12-3 on Wednesday.

Calvin (7-6) jumped out to a quick start with two runs in the second inning on an RBI-single from Isaac Hubka (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and a double from Matt Reynolds (Hopkins, Mich./Hopkins), and then added another run in the third on a Gabe Bonemer (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) steal to take a 3-0 lead.

Manchester (8-5) took control from there, however, jumping in front with a four-run second inning off Calvin starting pitcher Ian Schuster (Howell, Mich./Howell), and then adding more runs in the fourth (two), fifth (one) and sixth (three) to push the lead to 10-3 before adding two more runs in the eighth to finish off the win.

The Spartans finished with 20 total hits off four Calvin pitchers. Schuster (0-3) started the game and pitched two scoreless innings before running into trouble in the third in defeat. Noah Etnyre (Northville, Mich./Plymouth Christian) was the first reliever to see action for Calvin and pitched 4.1 innings before giving way to Bradyn Hubacheck (Miramar, Fla./Somerset Academy Charter) and Kyle Koning (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) in the eighth inning.

Bonemer led the Knights with two hits and added one run scored. Hubka added one hit, one run and one RBI.

NEXT UP: Calvin baseball will return to action on Friday, March 21, at Wheaton College for a two-day event. The Knights will face Marian University on Friday at 2:00 PM (CT) before games against Saint Mary's University (Minn.) and Wheaton on Saturday, March 22.
