Calvin Softball Closes Out Spring Trip With Two Five Inning Victories

WINTER HAVEN, Fl. - Today the Calvin softball team wrapped up their spring break trip in fashion as they picked up wins against Coe and Bowdoin to move to a 9-5 overall record.

GAME 1
CALVIN 8, COE 0

In their first game of the day, the Knights showed off their offensive dominance as Coe seemed to have no answer to the Calvin hitters.

Junior Carly Dole (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) gave the Knights a base runner in the bottom of the second inning when she forced the Kohawk defense to make an error. Senior catcher Taylor Sanborn (Midland, Mich./Midland) was quick to take advantage of the situation as she doubled to right center to give Calvin the lead. Back-to-back sacrifice flies from Alanna Garcia (Holt, Mich./Holt) and Tory Decker (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) allowed the Knights to extend their lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Calvin really got to work as senior Kennedi Pepin (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley Bourbonnais) hit a leadoff single back up the middle. She advanced to third thanks to a single from Decker before making good on a Coe defensive error and crossing the plate. Decker scored on the next play on a failed pickoff attempt while senior Emma Walker (Hamilton,  Mich./Saugatuck) scored shortly after on a single from sophomore Aubrey Herder (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) to extend the lead to 6-0. Calvin wrapped up their scoring two batters later when Dole smacked a double to left center to bring in Herder and second baseman Emily Sweetland (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline).

In the top of the fifth, led by junior pitcher Emma Ludema (Martin, Mich./Wayland) the Knights remained locked in and quickly retired the sign to nab the 8-0 victory in five innings.

Dole led the way for the Knights with two hits and two RBIs while Ludema finished her showing in the circle with five strikeouts.

GAME TWO
CALVIN 8, BOWDOIN 0

Calvin stayed hot in their second game against Bowdoin as Valeria Frias (Wyoming, Mich./Potters House) gave the Knights a lead off runner when she was hit by a pitch. A few batters later, Sanborn sent a sacrifice fly out to left field to allow Frias to cross the plate and give Calvin the 1-0 lead in the first.

The Knights added another run in the top of the second when Frias singled to score Decker and pinch runner Sage Mougin (New Carlisle, Ind./New Prairie) before a two RBI double from Decker in the top of the third extended Calvin's lead to 4-0.

In the top of the fourth, the Knights showed discipline in the batter's box as Garcia forced a bases loaded walk and Dole crossed the plate. One play later, Decker's ground ball to shortstop forced the Polar Bear defense to make a decision and gave pinch runner Lauren Wright (Dorr, Mich./Wayland) the opportunity to sneak home and make the score 6-0.

Calvin wrapped up their scoring in the top of the fifth inning when the Knights once again loaded the bases. Pepin picked up an RBI when she was hit by a pitch before Garcia forced her second walk of the game to give Calvin the 8-0 victory.

Decker led the way for the Knights with two hits and two RBIs while Garcia chipped in two RBIs. On defense, junior Brooke Hunderman (Grand Rapids, Mich./Calvin Christian) went the distance in the circle where she recorded three strikeouts and only gave up one hit.

COACHES COMMENTS: "It was great to finish a tough week with two solid wins," said head coach Becky Hilgert. "The schedule this week was to prepare us for our challenging conference opponents, and I felt we got better as a team each game. We overcame some uncharacteristic mistakes early in the week and finished string both offensively and defensively the last two days. We are looking forward to getting outside when we get back and continue to get better."

UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Friday, March 21st when they travel to Anderson University for a double header. Game one is set to begin at 3PM while game two will start around 5PM.
