ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The Calvin University men's tennis closed its Florida trip with a 6-1 loss to 40th-ranked Carthage College on Friday at Sanlando Park.
Calvin (5-5) played well against its top competition from the spring break trip and pushed Carthage (8-5) to several tiebreakers, but the Firebirds did well to finish off sets on the way to the win.
Carthage took the doubles point thanks to wins in the numbers one and two matches, but the number-three team of
Corwin Kim (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) and
Tanner Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) won 6-3.
In singles,
Rodrigo Alipio (Santos, São Paulo, Brazil/COC Universitario) was responsible for the lone Calvin point in the match thanks to a straight sets 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 win.
Ryan Broek (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) took his number-four singles match to a tiebreaker but lost in three sets 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 1-0.
COACH'S COMMENT: "This was the best tennis we played this week, but Carthage was a very tough opponent," Calvin co-interim head tennis coach
Jon Goorhouse said. "It was great to play them again and looking forward to next spring break for a rematch."
