Calvin Softball Falls to Belhaven Before Bouncing Back Against Ohio Wesleyan

WINTER HAVEN, Fl. - Today the Calvin softball team continued its spring break trip with games against No. 14 Belhaven and Ohio Wesleyan.

GAME 1
CALVIN 1, BELHAVEN 3

The No. 18 Knights opened day two by taking on the No. 14 Blazers of Belhaven where Calvin was led by junior pitcher Brooke Hunderman (Grand Rapids, Mich./Calvin Christian). Belhaven claimed the momentum early when scored a run in the bottom of the third before pushing another across in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth inning the Knights created an opportunity when freshman Valeria Frias (Wyoming, Mich./Potters House) hit a leadoff single up the middle. Sophomore Audrey Herder (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) laid down a bunt to move Frias into scoring position before senior catcher Taylor Sanborn (Midland, Mich./Midland) singled to right field to score the run and put the Knights on the board.

However, Belhaven fired back in the top of the seventh inning to take back a two-run lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Knights were unable to get anything going and Belhaven walked away with the 3-1 win.

Hunderman finished her showing in the circle with seven strikeouts and only giving up one earned run.

GAME 2
CALVIN 12, OHIO WESLEYAN 3

In game two the Knights put on an offensive clinic as they dominated the Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan.

In the first inning, the Knights took advantage of a Bishops defensive error when a failed pick-off attempt allowed junior third baseman Carly Dole (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) to score the first run of the game.

Calvin really got going in the top of the second inning when sophomore Emily Sweetland (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) knocked a leadoff double to left center. On the next play, senior Kennedi Pepin (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley Bourbonnais) laid down a bunt to move the runner before Sweetland saw an opening and headed home. Senior Lily Gaastra (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) singled through the left side and then stole second to move two runners into scoring position.

The Knights cashed in both runs when a single from Frias scored Pepin and Gaastra scored on a wild pitch. Calvin wrapped up its scoring for the inning when a shot from Dole to left field forced the defense to make an error as Frias scored to make the score 5-0.

Calvin continued to pile on in the top of the fourth when they took advantage of multiple Bishop errors to extend the lead to 7-0. In the fifth, Gaastra forced a walk and was later brought in when Dole beat out a single to third base. Ohio Wesleyan tried to give themselves some life in the bottom of the inning when they pushed three runs across the plate to make the score 8-3.

In the top of the seventh, the Knights delivered the final nails in the coffin when they tacked on four more runs thanks to hits from Brooklyn Evans (Port Huron, Mich./Marysville), Mya Brickley (Battle Creek, Mich./Delton Kellogg), and a bases-loaded walk from Roan Stanifer (Mishawaka, Ind./Marian).

Frias finished the game going 4-5 at the plate and scoring three runs. Brickely and Sweetland both notched two hits while Herder and Dole each had two runs scored.

Junior pitcher Emma Ludema (Martin, Mich./Wayland) started the game in the circle and went four innings where she recorded two strikeouts and gave up zero runs. Freshman pitcher Cailin Knoop (Reed City, Mich./Big Rapids) entered the game where she recorded one strikeout before senior Zoe Hazelhoff (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) took over and recorded two strikeouts.

COACHES COMMENTS: "Belhaven was a good challenge for us," said head coach Becky Hilgert. "We were right there with them, but a few costly defensive mistakes were the difference and they capitalized like good teams do. Defensively, we need to play a lot tighter behind our pitchers and offensively, we need to find our identity and trust all the work we've put in to be more consistent, productive hitters."

UP NEXT: The Knights continue spring break competition tomorrow when they take on Husson at 2 PM and Kean at 4:15 PM.
