Calvin Baseball Takes One of Three in Tuesday Tripleheader

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Calvin University baseball team finished one for three out of a busy day of baseball at Lake Myrtle Park on Tuesday.

Calvin (3-4) finished a suspended doubleheader against Widener University (6-6) in the morning with a 3-2 win in game one and an 8-1 loss in game two. To end the day, the Knights lost 10-6 in 13 innings to Ohio Northern University (6-3).

Calvin 3, Widener 2

Game one of the Widener doubleheader was suspended on Monday due to rain with the Knights leading 2-1 after four innings, and the Knights finished off the win by a 3-2 final on Tuesday morning to open the day.

Cam Seth (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian/GRCC) earned the win after pitching Monday's four innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out six to improve to 1-1 on the season.

The Knights scored in each of the first two innings and then added a third run in the fifth inning on a Logan Nelson (Fremont, Mich./Fremont) single.

Alex DeAngelis (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) pitched the final three innings of the game on Tuesday, allowing only one run on two hits to earn his second save of the season.

Widener 8, Calvin 1

The Knights finished off the Widener doubleheader with a split after dropping game two 8-1 on Tuesday morning.

Calvin jumped in front 1-0 on an RBI single by Matt Reynolds (Hopkins, Mich./Hopkins) in the first inning, but Widener took advantage of walks and defensive miscues by the Knights to score four runs in the second, one in the third, one in the fifth and then two more in the sixth inning to get the win.

Ian Schuster (Howell, Mich./Howell) started the game and fell to 0-2 on the season in defeat after allowing four runs (two earned) on one hit in 1.2 innings.

Ohio Northern 10, Calvin 6 (13 innings)

Calvin closed the day with a defeat to Ohio Northern by a 10-6 final in 13 innings.

The Knights took a big early lead with five runs in the first inning on four hits. Seth tripled home Ryan Brown (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) to open the scoring and then scored on a wild pitch. Josh Winkle (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) hit a two-run single, and Noah Swope (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) drove in the fifth run on a sacrifice bunt to push the lead to 5-0.

Calvin added another run in the third inning on a Swope RBI-single, but the Polar Bears' bullpen kept the Knights in check the rest of the way and allowed their offense to chip away. They started with one run in the fifth and added three more in the sixth off Calvin starter James Ross (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) to cut the deficit to 6-4.

Reliever Ethan DeBlecourt (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian/Spring Arbor) got the Knights through the eighth inning with 2.1 shutout innings, but the Polar Bears loaded the bases and scored twice in the ninth to tie the game 6-6 before a diving catch by Reynolds in center field ended the threat with the game tied 6-6.

The score remained tied until the 13th inning when the Polar Bears finally broke the tie with four unearned runs with the help of two Calvin errors to push them ahead for the 10-6 win.

Drew Diehl (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Catholic Central) pitched four shutout innings in relief before allowing four unearned runs in the 13th and took the loss to fall to 0-1.

Brown, Winkle and Swope each finished with two hits apiece to lead the team.

NEXT UP: Calvin baseball will return to action on Thursday, March 13, when it plays a doubleheader against La Roche University at Lake Myrtle Park.
