Baseball Splits Season Opening Double Header at Otterbein

LANCASTER, Ohio – The Calvin University baseball team opened the 2025 season under new head coach Joel Schipper with a doubleheader split at Otterbein University on Friday.

Calvin (1-1) won the opener 5-3 before Otterbein (1-4) secured the split with a 10-5 win in game two.

Game 1

Calvin got a career-best start from starting pitcher Nolan Coil (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) and held off a late Otterbein charge to win the opener 5-3.

Coil (1-0) got the ball on the mound for the Knights and went seven shutout innings, allowing only five hits and one walk while striking out a career-high 10 batters to help the Knights build a 5-0 lead.

Cam Seth (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian/GRCC) helped the Knights to a strong start with a single that scored Ryan Brown (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) in the first inning, and then doubled home Brown in the fifth to push the lead to 2-0.

The Knights added two runs in the sixth on a Noah Swope (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) double and Landen Mikula (St. Johns, Mich./St. Johns) single, and then pushed the lead to 5-0 in the seventh with a double steal that plated Gabe Bonemer (Okemos, Mich./Okemos).

Otterbein rallied for three runs in the eighth, but Alex DeAngelis (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) got out of a jam to keep the Knights in front by two and then got a ground ball double play to end the game with the tying run on first base in the ninth to earn the save.

Brown, Bonemer and Seth each finished with two hits apiece to lead the Calvin offense.

Game 2

Otterbein jumped out to a big lead early on the way to earning the split with a 10-5 win in game two.

The Cardinals scored five runs in the first inning and then added four more runs in the second to build a 9-1 lead after two innings.

The Knights chipped away at the lead with one run in the fourth, another in the sixth, and two more in the seventh to cut the deficit to 9-5, but the Cardinals were able to tack one more run in the seventh and held on the rest of the way.

The Calvin offense finished with 12 hits in the game, led by two apiece from Bonemer, Josh Winkle (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), Nate Mason (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern), Hunter Scholma (Allendale, Mich./Allendale) and Aidan Jaworowski (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland East). Bonemer, Winkle and Mikula each finished with one RBI.

Seth (0-1) could not slow down the bats from Otterbein in his first start for the Knights in defeat.

COACH'S COMMENT: "Overall, our coaching staff saw a lot of positive things today," Schipper said. "It was a solid first team win. We got off to a rough start in game two, but offensively we put together 12 hits and had opportunities, but didn't capitalize enough. We'll get back to work before heading south for the RussMatt Tournament in a week."

NEXT UP: Calvin baseball will return to action on Saturday, March 8, when it opens its Florida trip with a doubleheader against John Carroll University.
