WHEATON, Ill. – The 17th-ranked Calvin University men's swimming and diving team won it dual meet at Wheaton College (Ill.) on Saturday afternoon by a 179-111 final score.
Calvin won all but three individual events to go with one of the two relays on the day.
The first individual winner for Calvin was
Jackson Merkel (Grandville, Mich./Grandville), who won the 200 Freestyle in 1:43.2.
Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Ohio/Homeschool) followed with a first-place finish in the 100 Breaststroke in a time of 56.75, followed in second place in the event by
Josh Krampe (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) in 58.33.
Jake Schotanus (Versaille, Ky./Woodford County) and
Alex Bergsma (Carmel, Ind./Carmel/Wheaton College) also finished one-two in the 200 Butterfly, with Schotanus taking first in 2:01.67.
Calvin took home first, second, fourth and fifth in the 50 Freestyle, with
Carter Detweiler (Farmington Hills, Mich./Council Rock North/Ohio Northern) leading the way in a time of 21.57 to win the event.
Zachary Logan (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) took second place in 21.67.
Andrew Taulbee (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) won the 100 Freestyle in 48.2, while
Jacob Ziegler (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) won the 200 Backstroke ahead of second-place
Ryan Halberg (Novi, Mich./Northville). Krampe led four Knights in the top four in the 200 Breaststroke with a time of 2:12.95 to win that event.
After Detweiler (4:56.97) and Bergsma (4:57.41) took the top two places in the 500 Freestyle,
Charles Platt (Downers Grove, Ill/Downers Grove North) won the 100 Butterfly in an NCAA III 'B' cut time of 49.17, ahead of
Will Bales (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Everett), Merkel and Gemmen in second, third and fourth, respectively.
Cardin Nguyen (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) won the 200 IM in a time of 1:56.21 in the final individual race of the day.
The 400 Freestyle Relay closed the event, with the 'A' relay of Detweiler, Logan,
Kellen Morford (Medina, Ohio/Medina) and Platt taking first in 3:07.4. The 'B' relay of Merkel,
Luca Zdravkov (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North), Ziegler and Bales took second in 3:10.7.
