Calvin Football Falls to Hope In Rivalry Matchup

HOLLAND, Mich. – Calvin's two-game win streak was snapped Saturday evening as the Knights suffered a 52-0 rivalry defeat at Hope.

The nationally-ranked Flying Dutchmen (8-1 overall, 5-1 MIAA) scored 28 first half points and 24 in the second half while limiting Calvin's offense to 152 yards of total offense. Hope also owned a significant advantage in time of possession, possessing the ball nearly 39 minutes to Calvin's 21.

Hope took the opening kickoff and was forced with a third and 17 but came up with a key pass play to convert the first down. Hope was 7 of 11 on third down opportunities throughout the game.

Trailing 21-0, Calvin had a chance to get back into the game in the second quarter when it forced Hope quarterback Alex Thole into a fumble near midfield that was forced and recovered by freshman Reed Vogeler (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS). Calvin moved downfield and had a first down on the Hope 13. After three straight pass incompletions, Calvin was forced into a 30-yard field goal attempt and the kick sailed wide. Hope then went on to punch in a touchdown with just eight seconds left in the second quarter to build a 28-0 halftime lead.

Hope also forced Calvin into three turnovers as the Flying Dutchmen intercepted the Knights three times. Hope also recorded 557 yards of total offense.

Sophomore quarterback Thomas Vaccaro was 10 of 17 passing for 44 yards. He also ran 12 times for 61 yards. He was sacked three times. Sophomore Drake Irwin (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) also saw time at quarterback for the Knights. He was 4 of 8 passing for 22 yards. He ran seven times for 17 yards and was sacked once. Sophomore Luke Michmerhuizen (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) had five catches for 30 yards.

Vogeler led Calvin's defense with a career-high 19 tackles. Sophomore Gage Jones (Ludington, Mich./Ludington HS) had 11 tackles and sophomore Caden Kolanowski (Goodrich, Mich./Goodrich HS) nine tackles. Jones broke up two passes while Kolanowski broke up two.

Irwin punted six times for an average of 37.8 yards per punt which included a long of 48.

COACHES COMMENT: "I thought defensively we did some good things but we could not get stops on third down when we needed them," said Calvin head football coach Trent Figg. "Offensively we never got going. Hope's a really good football team so a credit to them and Coach Stuursma for putting together a game plan that his team executed extremely well. We can't have the ball just 21 minutes though and expect to be in a game. We have to be better than that but that falls on me. This one hurts, but we'll regroup. We have a big opportunity next week and we are looking forward to it."

NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Albion next Saturday for its season finale with kickoff set for noon at Albion's Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium.
