The Calvin women's soccer team will face 4
th-ranked Messiah in a Round of 16 game of the NCAA III Tournament Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. (ET). It marks the second time in three years that Calvin (16-4-0) has reached the third round of the NCAA III Tournament. Messiah (21-2-0) is the host of a four-team sectional that also includes top-ranked Washington University (Mo.) and MIT with the WashU (17-0-1) set to face eighth-ranked MIT (22-2-1) at 11 a.m. in the opening game on Friday.

Calvin received an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament by winning the MIAA Tournament title two weeks ago. The Knights defeated rival Hope 2-1 in the MIAA Tournament final behind a goal from senior
CeCe McCarthy with just 45 seconds left in regulation. Calvin won its sixth consecutive MIAA regular season title by finishing 8-0-0 in league play. Calvin carries a 13-game win streak into Friday's game against Messiah.
Calvin hosted an NCAA III Regional last weekend and advanced by defeating Penn State Behrend 1-0 in the first round and then defeating top (regional) seed Illinois Tech 2-1 in overtime in the regional final. Junior
Mikaela Waroway scored the game-winning goal with 4:42 left in the first overtime. Her winning strike came from 25 yards out and beat the Illinois Tech goalie top shelf.
Friday's contest will feature Calvin's first matchup against Messiah in women's soccer since the 2006 NCAA III Tournament National Quarterfinals in Rochester, New York. The contest finished in a 1-1 tie with Messiah advancing by winning a penalty kick shootout 5-3.
Calvin is under the direction of head coachÂ
Emily Ottenhoff who is in her eighth season as head coach. She was a freshman on Calvin's 2006 team that reached the NCAA III Quarterfinals against Messiah. As Calvin's head coach, she has a carer won-loss record of 102-29-13 (.738) that includes MIAA regular season titles in 2021 (spring and fall), 2022, 2023, 2024 & 2025.  She has led Calvin to five MIAA Tournament titles (2021 spring, 2022, 2023,  2024 & 2025) and NCAA III Tournament trips in 2021 (fall), 2022, 2023 , 2024 & 2025 with the Knights advancing to the Round of 16 of the NCAA III Tournament in 2023 and now 2025. Ottenhoff is a 2010 Calvin graduate. She was an All-American midfielder for the Knights in 2009 and was part of national quarterfinalist teams in 2006 and 2009. She was also a four-year member of the Calvin women's basketball program including a 2007 team that reached the national quarterfinals.

Messiah is under the direction of legendary head coach Scott Frey who is no stranger to the MIAA as he previously served as head men's soccer coach at Alma College before returning to his alma mater Messiah to take over its women's program in 2000. Since taking over the reins of the Falcons, he has led Messiah to six national titles. He has a career won-loss record of 517-35-7 for a winning percentage of .929 that ranks as the highest winning percentage in NCAA soccer (men's or women's) across all three divisions. He picked up his 500
th victory at Messiah with a 3-0 win over Ursinus College on September 6.
Messiah advanced to the NCAA III Tournament Round of 16 with a 6-1 first round win over Southern Maine and a 1-0 second round win over Amherst. The Falcons feature a trio of high-scoring attackers. Senior forward Hannah Adair has 39 points on the strength of 15 goals and nine assists. She has five game-winning goals in 2025. Sophomore midfielder Addi Martin has 13 goals, four assists and 30 points while junior forward Brittany Laird has 12 goals, five assists and 29 points. Senior Ava Wert has been the primary goalkeeper for Messiah, producing a 0.26 goals-against-average along with 27 saves and 10 shutouts.
Messiah captured the Middle Atlantic Conference regular season title at 7-0-0 and then captured the MAC Tournament title with a 3-0 semifinal win over Eastern University and a 4-0 win over Stevenson University in the MAC Tournament final. Senior defender Tahlia Lloyd was named the MAC Commonwealth Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the All-MAC Commonwealth First Team along with Messiah teammates Hannah Adair, Bailie Dull, Brittany Laird, Mia Libby and Ella Lent-Koop. Addi Martin, Ava Wert and Alayna Williams received All-MAC Commonwealth Second Team honors.
