Calvin Men's Soccer Advances to MIAA Tourney Semis With Win Over Olivet

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich, - Calvin advanced to the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament with a 5-0 first round victory over The University of Olivet Saturday night at Calvin Soccer Stadium.

Calvin (14-3-1) will travel to Albion (12-2-2) Wednesday night for a semifinal game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

In its win over Olivet (2-9-4), Calvin broke down the Comet low block with a pair of surges by freshman Toby Simeone (Riverside, Australia/St. Patrick's College) that set up scores. In the 31st minute, Simeone collected a long pass and moved through the right side of the 18-yard box. With a quick touch, he moved inside and slid a smart pass to junior Zac Brooks (Lone Tree, Colo./Valor Christian) who slipped a shot inside the far post for a 1-0 Calvin lead. In the 42nd minute, Simeone blew through the center, pressured two defenders and slid a pass outside. With the goalie off his line, freshman Will Lanham (Commerce, Twp./Pontiac Notre Dame Prep) received the pass and fired a shot inside the far post for a 2-0 Calvin lead.

Lanham finished with a brace as he fired in shot from the right wing in the 72nd minute off a feed from Brooks. The goal was Lanham's ninth of the season. Junior Matt Torrell (Rochester, N.Y. /The Charles Finney School) fired in his team-best 14th goal of the season a few minutes later, cranking a shot that ricocheted off a defender and over the goalkeeper. Calvin scored its final goal off a set piece in the 84th minute. Senior Athan Ladas (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany Hills) whipped in a free kick from the right wing that found the head of junior teammate Atsoma Agbu (Tomball, Tex./Klein Cain HS). Agbu was able to head the ball past a hard-charging goalkeeper for the final score of the evening.

Calvin finished the match with a 17-8 shots at goal advantage. Senior Zach Moore (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown HS) went the distance in goal, collecting two saves for his fifth shutout of the season and the seventh of his Calvin career.

COACHES COMMENT: "Great to win and advance," said Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "As expected, Olivet made it tough with its organization and commitment. Was really proud of some of the things we did tonight and opportunities that we created. We're excited for the opportunity to prepare for a semifinal next week."

NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Albion for an MIAA Tournament semifinal match next Wednesday at 7 p.m.
