Calvin Women's Soccer Defeats Adrian to Claim Sixth Straight MIAA Regular Season Championship

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Today the Calvin women's soccer team secured its sixth straight regular season MIAA Championship when it took down the Hornets of Kalamazoo. With today's win the Knights finish regular season play with a 12-4-0 overall record and a 8-0 MIAA record.

The Knights came out swinging when they created their first scoring opportunity just five minutes into the match. A cross was sent into the eighteen-yard box and bounced off several defenders before falling to the feet of a waiting Liz Williams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian). Williams took one touch before sending a bending ball into the top corner of the net to give the Knights an early lead over Adrian.

Looking to continue the high-speed pace of play, Williams took a quick throw in Adrian territory just five minutes later. Junior Mikaela Waroway (Ann Arbor, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) collected the ball just outside the eighteen-yard box and turned toward goal to see the Bulldog goalkeeper out of position. She took one touch before sending a loafing shot high out of the keeper's reach to the top left-hand corner and extended the Calvin lead to 2-0.

The Williams to Waroway connection remained strong when the duo combined for its second goal of the evening in the 19th minute to add to the Knights lead. With nineteen seconds left in the half, the Knights tacked on one more goal when senior Elie Farrell (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) sent a rocket past the diving Bulldog goalkeeper to send Calvin into halftime leading 4-0.

In the second half, senior CeCe McCarthy (Ypsilanti, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) got in on the goal scoring action courtesy of an assist from sophomore Ellery Boeving (Howell, Mich./Howell). Defensively, the Knights only allowed one shot on goal which was easily handled by senior goalkeeper Kalex Dodge (Leslie, Mich./Leslie) as Calvin picked up the 5-0 victory.

In winning its sixth straight MIAA regular season title, Calvin matched the longest championship streak in MIAA women's soccer history originally achieved by Kalamazoo College which won the first six MIAA titles from 1989 to 1994. Calvin head coach Emily Ottenhoff has now been a part of 10 MIAA Champion women's soccer teams, four as a player at Calvin from 2006 to 2009 and now six as the head coach of her alma mater. She also was a part of one MIAA regular season title (2007) as a Calvin women's basketball player.

COACHES COMMENTS: "It's hard to win so I'm very pleased with our group that we were able to do it again," said head coach Emily Ottenhoff when asked about the team's sixth straight regular season championship. "We had a bumpy start to the season after taking some losses to some of the best teams in the country but I think those games really prepared us for the rest of the season and it showed down the stretch. Six in a row is a cool thing and we are excited for the opportunity to be back home next week and play in front of our fans once again."

UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Tuesday, November 4th for their first match of the MIAA Tournament. As the number one seed, Calvin will have a bye for the first round and will await the winner of one of the quarterfinal match ups.
