GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The 19th-ranked Calvin University women's swimming and diving team competed in a triangular meet against NCAA II fourth-ranked Grand Valley State University (GVSU) and 17th-ranked Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) on Saturday afternoon at Venema Aquatic Center.
In the meet scoring, Calvin lost to GVSU 249-51 and was barely edged out by SVSU 153-146.
The meet started with the 200 Medley Relay, where the team of
Madi McNearney (Riverside, Mo./Park Hill South),
Elise Bajwa (Bethesda, Md./Brookewood School),
Emma Merkel (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville) and
Meghan Bengelink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) swam in third place with a time of 1:45.67.
The top individual event for the Knights was the 50 Freestyle, where
Ella Andrews (Carmel, Ind./Heritage Christian School) took second (24.17), Bengelink finished third (24.36), and
Maria Heeres (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) was fourth (24.82).
Zoe Poe (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette Twp.) finished second in the 1000 Freestyle in a time of 10:36.86, followed by
Avery Russell (Battle Creek, Mich./Battle Creek Lakeview) in fifth place in 11:81. Poe also scored a sixth-place finish in the 500 Freestyle in 5:10.3.
Merkel finished second in the 200 Backstroke (2:04.34) and fourth in the 200 Freestyle (1:53.93). She was followed by
Holly VanderWeele (San Antonio, Texas/Great Hearts Monte Vista North), who finished eighth in the 200 Freestyle to go with a fourth-place finish in the 100 Freestyle (53.49). Andrews took fifth in the 100 Freestyle (53.52) and Bengelink took eighth (54.46).
Bajwa finished fourth in the 100 Breaststroke in 1:04.43, followed by
Gracie Ganger (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) in eighth place (1:10.59). Ganger also finished seventh in the 200 Breaststroke in a time of 2:29.76.
McNearney took home top-eight finishes in in the 100 Backstroke (seventh in 59.6), 200 Backstroke (seventh in 2:10.88) and 200 IM (eighth in 2:16.01).
Grace Schutter (Shelby Township, Mich./Dwight D. Eisenhower) took sixth in the 100 Butterfly (1:01.89), followed by
Elyse Radawski (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) in eighth place in that event.
The final swim of the day was the 400 Freestyle Relay, where the team of Merkel, Poe, Andrews and Bengelink took second place in a time of 3:32.7.
In diving,
Veronica Skipper (Chicago, Ill./Northside College Prep) took fourth off the three-meter board with 229.45 points and fifth off the one-meter board with 225.1 points.
NEXT UP: Calvin swimming and diving will return to action on Saturday, October 25, when it competes in the MIAA Invite at Holland Aquatic Center starting at 1:00 PM.
