ALBION, Mich. – The Calvin University women's soccer team remains unbeaten in MIAA play following a 5-1 win at Albion College on Saturday.
The match started in a weather delay and Albion (8-4-1, 1-3-1) started quickly once the game got going thanks to a goal deflected off a Calvin defender in the fifth minute to give the Britons an early 1-0 lead.
Calvin (10-4-0, 6-0-0) answered quickly, however, as
CeCe McCarthy (Ypsilanti, Mich./Father Richard Gabriel/GVSU) slipped behind the defense with a pass from
Mikaela Waroway (Ann Arbor, Mich./Father Richard Gabriel) and tied the score 1-1 just 62 seconds after the Albion goal.
The Knights would take the lead in the 14th minute when Waroway assisted on another goal, this one by
Kiah Nichols (Hastings, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg/Delta CC) to put Calvin on top 2-1.
Nichols added her second goal of the day in the 34th minute when she cleaned up a rebound off a long shot from
Katherine Bergman (Farmington Hills, Mich./Farmington) that rang off the cross bar but bounced right to Nichols in the box to send the Knights into halftime with a 3-1 lead.
With two goals already on the day, Nichols added two more in the second half to help the Knights put the game away. Her third goal came in the 59th minute on a header off a cross from McCarthy, and the fourth came off a pass from
Vivian Nagelkirk (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) into the box in the 69th minute of play.
Nichols entered the day with two goals on the season and pushed that total to six to tie her for the team lead this season. McCarthy's goal and two assists pushed her season point total to a team-best 15. She now has five goals this season.
The Knights outshot the Britons 24-10 in shots at goal and 11-3 in shots on goal. Calvin also won 10 corners to only two for Albion.
Kalex Dodge (Jackson, Mich./Leslie) stopped two of the three Albion shots on goal for the Knights.
COACH'S COMMENT: "A really big road result for our team today at Albion," Calvin head women's soccer coach
Emily Ottenhoff said. "I appreciate our quick response to them going up a goal with a goal of our own. Kiah deserves a shout out with a four-goal day. She was fantastic today."
NEXT UP: Calvin women's soccer will return to action on Wednesday, October 22, when it travels to Kalamazoo College for a match scheduled to start at 6:00 PM.
