- The Lead-Up – Calvin heads into season two under head coach Trent Figg. The Knights are off to a 4-1 start after wins over Oberlin (88-6), Concordia of Wisconsin (34-7), Heidelberg (40-37 OT) and Kalamazoo (24-16) with Calvin coming off a 55-6 loss at Alma two weeks ago. Calvin faces its third MIAA conference opponent on Saturday in Adrian. Adrian is 5-0 on the year including 2-0 in league play. Adrian opened its season with a big 10-7 win over FCS (formerly D1-AA) Valparaiso on September 6. Calvin is paced on offense by sophomore running back Hunter Hogan who has 700 yards rushing (5.6 ypc) and seven touchdowns. Hogan has also hauled in 18 catches for 117 yards. Sophomore quarterback Thomas Vaccaro has connected on 97 of 145 pass attempts (.669) for 966 yards and 10 touchdowns. He has been intercepted twice. Sophomores Luke Michmerhuizen, Jude Klunder and Seth Anderson have been his top receiving targets. Michmerhuizen has 28 catches, 345 yards and five touchdown receptions. Klunder has 21 grabs for 237 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore Seth Anderson has 11 catches for 126 yards and two touchdowns. On defense, sophomore Carson Schnurstein has an MIAA-leading 61 tackles (29 solo) including 12.5 tackles for loss. Sophomore Caiden Bolduc has 31 tackles, five sacks, 7.5 tackles for loss and has returned one interception for a touchdown. Adrian is led by transfer quarterback Noah Beaudrie who has connected on 74 percent of his passes, thrown for 11 touchdowns and run for three more. Sophomore running back Trey Bruggemman is a threat around the goal-line, rushing for 382 yards and nine touchdowns with his longest run of the season a 65-yard burst. He has also caught one touchdown pass. He leads the MIAA in overall touchdowns scored this fall with 10. Sophomore Ethan Abberger is the primary receiving target for Beaudrie with 38 catches for 474 yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore linebacker Bennett Gilde has 31 tackles for Adrian two for loss. Junior defensive back Ethan Burrows already has five interceptions on the season.
- Last Year's Meeting – Adrian handed Calvin a 30-10 defeat at Adrian's Docking Stadium. Adrian led 14-10 at halftime and pulled away late, blocking a Calvin punt for a safety and adding a clinching touchdown in the final six minutes to seal the win. Calvin was limited to 121 yards of total offense while Adrian managed just 282 yards. Chase Bradman was 14 of 28 passing for 139 yards and a touchdown for Calvin. Seth Anderson scored Calvin's lone touchdown. Shondell Hardnett had 83 yards rushing for Adrian with Noah Heide completing 13 of 17 passes for 146 yards and three touchdowns. Jalen Wallace had five catches for 84 yards and a touchdown for Adrian.
- Calvin Week Five Rewind – Calvin fell at Alma 55-6 two weeks ago as the Knights tasted defeat for the first time in 2025. The host Scots rolled up 699 yards of total offense in the win. Calvin sophomore quarterback Thomas Vaccaro was 22 of 33 passing for 168 yards while sophomore Drake Irwin came on late in the fourth quarter and was 2-for-2 for 24 yards including a 17-yard touchdown strike to freshman Hudson Shoup in the final minute of play. Jude Klunder was Calvin's top receiver with five catches for 70 yards while freshman Leighton Kolk came on to rush for 33 yards in four carries late in the contest to lead the ground game. Sophomore Caden Kolanowski had nine tackles to lead the Calvin defense.
- Adrian Week Five Rewind – Adrian claimed a 28-7 home victory over Albion on October 4 at Adrian's Docking Stadium. Adrian led 14-7 at halftime and shutout the Britons 14-0 in the second half to roll to the win. The Adrian defense limited Albion to just 156 yards of total offense including just 28 yards on the ground. Sophomore tailback Trey Bruggemann powered in for three rushing touchdowns to go with 135 rushing yards on 19 carries. Senior quarterback Noah Beaudrie was again stellar for the Bulldogs, completing 20 of 25 passes for 162 yards and no interceptions. Sophomore wideout Ethan Abberger had a big day, catching 12 balls for 76 yards. Senior Liam Karry collected a team-high eight tackles.
- The Calvin Coach-Head coach Trent Figg was hired on January 6, 2023. He has a career won-loss record of 6-9 heading into Saturday. Figg is a native of Chillicothe, Missouri, located an hour-and-a-half from Kansas City. He is a 2008 graduate of William Jewell College where he was a four-year member of the football program as a special teams ace and defensive back. He later earned his master's degree from Northwest Missouri State in 2013. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at (then NAIA) William Jewell and later had stints as the special teams coordinator and defensive coordinator at D2 Southern Arkansas, defensive coordinator at William Jewell and special teams coordinator at Missouri State. He later spent two years (2019-21) at the University of Hawaii, serving as chief of staff of the football program and later associate head coach. In 2022, he served as the lead offensive analyst for the University of Oregon football program under head coach Dan Lanning. Figg and Lanning are former teammates and roommates at William Jewell College and stood up for each other at their respective weddings.
- A Look at the Adrian Coach – Adrian head coach Joe Palka is in his second year as head coach of the Adrian Bulldogs. He led Adrian to a 6-4 record in year one and is 11-4 at the helm of the Bulldogs heading into Saturday. He was hired in November of 2023 after previously serving as head football coach of Saline High School. He is the 24th head coach in Adrian College football history. Palka had been head coach of Saline since 2012, compiling a won-loss record of 112-21 with 11 consecutive playoff appearances and 18 high school playoff victories. At Saline, he was the head coach of current Notre Dame starting quarterback C.J. Carr. From 2004-2006, he was the recruiting coordinator, special teams co-coordinator and secondary coach at Eastern Michigan University. He is an Eastern Michigan University graduate where he was a three-year starter at linebacker after walking on to the team originally.
- More on Hunter Hogan – Calvin sophomore running back Hunter Hogan has had a big first half of the season for the Knights with 700 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. He opened the season with four straight 100-yard rushing games, going for 119 yards against Oberlin, 215 against Concordia, 233 at Heidelberg and 115 last week against Kalamazoo but was bottled up for just 18 yards in the October 4 loss at Alma. He now has 721 career rushing yards 12 total career touchdowns (7 rushing, 5 receiving). He is averaging 181.8 all-purpose yards a game, ranking seventh nationally.
- More on Noah Beaudrie – Adrian senior quarterback Noah Beaudrie has had a big first half of the season. A transfer from Division III power Mount Union, the Monroe native has completed 92 of 124 passes for an impressive 74.19 percent completion rate. He has 11 touchdown passes and no interceptions. He is averaging 229.2 passing yards-per-game. He also has 218 yards rushing with three touchdowns, averaging 5.7 yards-per-rush. He was named to the D3football.com National Team of the Week on September 30. At Mount Union last fall, he was the starter through nine games on a team that eventually reached the Division III National Championship game. He threw for 16 touchdowns and rushed for nine more, earning 2024 Second Team All-OAC honors.
- Meeting of Maroons – The leading receivers for Calvin and Adrian are former high school teammates at Holland Christian High School. Calvin sophomore Luke Michmerhuizen leads Calvin in receptions (28), receiving yards (345) and receiving touchdowns (5). Adrian sophomore receiver Ethan Abberger was part of a tag-tandem receiving unit with Michmerhuizen at Holland Christian. He is off to a big sophomore year as he leads Adrian in receptions (38) and receiving yards (474). He also has four touchdown receptions.
- National Poll Points – Adrian received 14 votes in the latest American Football Coaches (AFCA) D3 Poll on Monday, sitting eight spots outside the Top 25. The Bulldogs also received 18 votes in the D3football.com Top 25 poll, sitting five spots outside the Top 25.
- MIAA Preseason Poll – Calvin was picked to finish seventh out of eight teams in the 2025 MIAA preseason poll with champion Alma selected as the MIAA's pre-season favorite and defending MIAA champion Hope picked a close second. 2025 MIAA Preseason Poll: 1. - NCAA III Statistics Top 10 – Hunter Hogan is ranked seventh in the latest NCAA III statistics in all-purpose yards-per-game (181.80). He is ranked ninth nationally in total rushing yards (700) and sixth nationally in rushing yards per game (140.0). Carson Schnurstein is ranked eighth nationally in total tackles (61) and 28th in solo tackles (29). Adrian senior quarterback Noah Beaudrie is ranked fourth nationally in completion percentage (.742) and 12th in passing efficiency (181.1). Adrian's Ethan Burrows is tied for the national lead in interceptions (5). Trey Brueggemann is 11th in rushing touchdowns (9). As a team, Adrian is ranked second nationally in rushing defense, allowing only 29.2 rushing yards a game. Adrian is the national leader in turnover margin (+2.40 per game). The Bulldogs are also ranked fourth nationally team passing efficiency (86.70) and sixth in scoring defense (8.2 ppg).
- MIAA Weekly Honors – Carson Schnurstein was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 29 for his 10-tackle performance in Calvin's win over Kalamazoo on September 27. Luke Michmerhuizen was named the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week and Caiden Bolduc named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week on September 22 for their efforts in Calvin's victory at Heidelberg. Hunter Hogan was named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 15 for the Knights. Adrian's sophomore defensive back Quincy Dorsey was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 8. Junior Tim Simons was named MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept. 22. Noah Beaudrie was named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 29.
- National Honors – Sophomore linebacker Caiden Bolduc was named to the D3football.com National Team of the Week on Sept. 23 for his play in Calvin's win at Heidelberg in week three. It marked the second straight week a Calvin linebacker has received the honor as Carson Schnurstein was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week for week two.
- A Look at Calvin – Once again, Calvin features one of the younger rosters in America this fall as the Knights feature 38 freshmen and 67 sophomores as part of their 116-man roster. 13 players feature from other states including Illinois (4), Texas (2), California (1), Louisiana (1), Tennessee (1), North Carolina (1), Florida (1), New Mexico (1) and New York (1) with the remaining 103 coming from Michigan.

- The Quarterback Room – Sophomore transfer Thomas Vaccaro has been selected to start at quarterback on Saturday with sophomore Drake Irwin his backup. Vaccaro is a transfer from Samford University (Ala.) where he spent two years which included a redshirt season. He is a graduate of Christ Presbyterian Academy in Nashville, Tennessee. Vaccaro was Irwin is a local product out of Rockford High School. He appeared in five games in 2024, completing 7 of 9 passes with one touchdown. At Rockford High School, he led the Rams to a Division I District Title his senior year. Also listed at quarterback are true freshmen Beau Harris and Amari Powell.
- Receiving Unit – The Calvin starting receiver unit features a strong West Michigan flavor as Luke Michmherhuizen (Holland Christian), Seth Anderson (Rockford) and Jude Klunder (Grand Rapids Christian HS) are listed as starters today. Sophomore Hunter Hogan (Ravenna HS) will also see receiving looks out of the backfield. Sophomores Shamar White (East Kentwood HS) and McCoy Baxter (Rockford HS) are listed as key backups.The 6-7 Michmerhuizen is the second member of his immediate family to be a Calvin varsity athlete as his older sister Nicole was a multiple All-American for the Calvin women's track and field team including a national champion in the 10,000 meter run in 2013.
- OK-Red Flavor – The Calvin football team has a strong representation from the Ottawa-Kent (OK) Red Conference as Rockford (Seth Anderson, Drake Irwin, Mike Liggett, Jonah Carlson, McCoy Baxter, Gavin Currie), Jenison (Zaiden Chirco, Rowan Stewart, Colin Diekman, Trevor Martens) and East Kentwood (KJ Harp, ShaMar White, Breylon Cox, Kenji Nou, Gabe Wolf), Grand Haven (Logan Minier), Grandville (Aven Kaat) and Caledonia (Reed Vogeler) are all represented on the Calvin roster with a total of 18 O K Red alumni.
- Cousin Connection – Sophomore quarterback Drake Irwin and sophomore wide receiver Jude Klunder are first cousins.
- Classroom Distinction – The 2025 Calvin football team features 17 individuals were named to the 2024-25 MIAA Academic Honor Roll for maintaining a 3.50 grade point average or above for the entire academic year while earning a varsity letter. Those 17 individuals include: Paul Bouma, Peter DeKruyter, Colin Diekman, Tate Dohm, Ben Ernstes, Noah Funk, Andrew Helmus, Drake Irwin, Brady Jacobs, Caden Kolanowski, Peter Markvluwer, Trevor Martens, Luke Michmerhuizen, Micah Pobursky, Hayden Slegers, Conner Smits and Brayden Steinbacher.
- Transfer Portal – Calvin has nine players that have transferred over from other collegiate football programs. Those nine individuals are senior Jair Nowlin (Greenville University), senior Charlie Garbowski (Finlandia University), junior Alex Minnehan (Grand Valley State), junior C.J. Sheets (Davenport University), junior Sam Gallo (Concordia, Mich.), sophomore Wyatt Young (Saginaw Valley State University), sophomore Thomas Vaccaro (Samford University), sophomore Tyler Porte (Central Michigan University) and sophomore Carter Bylsma (Dordt University).
- Just for Kicks – Calvin's lead kicker is sophomore Logan Nap from Lawton, Michigan. He also serves as one of Calvin's punters. Sophomore Drake Irwin has received more punting duty as of late, averaging 43.7 yards per punt.
- Traveling from Out-of-State – Calvin features 13 players from outside Michigan. Those players include senior Jair Nowlin (Sugarhill, Georgia), junior Alexander Minneham (Lakeville, New York), sophomore Tripp Moore (Millsap, Texas), sophomore Hayden Slegers (Ontario, California), sophomore Thomas Vaccaro (Franklin, Tenn.), sophomore Kai Hanog (Weatherford, Texas), sophomore Max Lenters (Palos Heights, Illinois), freshman Hudson Shoup (Charlotte, N.C.), junior C.J. Sheets (Longwood, Fla..), freshman Christian Flutman (Orland Park, Il.), freshman Chase Sytsma (Orland Park, Il..), freshman Ryan Ramirez (Albuquerque, N.M.), freshman Edward Van Dellen (Evergreen Park, Ill.).
- Whitehall Claims First Dibs – The first recruit to commit to the Calvin University football program was redshirt freshman Winton Napier who is slated to start at left tackle. Napier is one of four graduates of Whitehall High School on the Calvin roster joined by sophomore linebacker Trenton TenBrock, sophomore linebacker Jackson Cook and freshman offensive lineman Connor Nash.
- High Schools Represented – The high schools with the most represented players are: Hudsonville Unity Christian (7), Rockford (6), Holland Christian (5), East Kentwood (5), Grand Rapids Christian (4) and Jenison High School (4).
- A Look Ahead – The Knights continue their three-game homestand next Saturday hosting Trine at 1 p.m. Calvin follows with a Nov. 1 home contest against Olivet at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at Calvin Soccer Stadium.
