GRANVILLE, Oh. – The Calvin women's swimming and diving team concluded a weekend swing through the state of Ohio was a triangular Saturday afternoon at Denison University with Carnegie Mellon also competing. All three teams entered the meet nationally-ranked with Denison ranked fifth, Calvin 15
th and Carnegie Mellon 16
th.
Sophomore
Emma Merkel (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville HS) had Calvin's lone first place swim on Saturday as she claimed first in the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:04.66 with junior
Madi McNearney (Riverside, Mo./Park Hill South HS) fourth (2:10.80). Markel also raced to a second place swim in the 100 backstroke in a time of 57.84.
Freshman
Zoe Poe (Bridgeville, Pa. South Fayette Twp.) was third in the 400 IM (4:38.68) and second in the 1000 freestyle (10:24.27). Senior
Megan Pankratz (Palatine, Ill. William Fremd) was seventh in the race (11:24.09).
Sophomore
Elise Bajwa (Bethesda, Md./Brookewood School) was third in the 100 breaststroke in a season-best time of 1:05.70.
Graduate student
Maggie Farrell (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) was third in the 100 butterfly (56.33) and fourth in the 50 freestyle (23.95). Senior
Sydney Sonday (Portage, Mich./Portage Central HS) was fifth in the 50 freestyle (24.09). Sonday then took fifth in the 100 freestyle (53.49) with junior
Meghan Bengelink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) sixth (54.21).
Freshman
Ella Andrews (Carmel, Ind. Heritage Christian School) was fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:00.05) and freshman
Gracie Ganger (Tipp City, Ohio Tippercanoe) fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:26.40).
Senior
Kiah Heminghous (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) scored on both diving boards as she placed fifth on the three-meter board (234.20) and sixth on the one-meter board (201.70).
Calvin had strong showings in both relays. Merkel, Bajwa, Farrell and Sonday placed second in the 200 medley relay (1:43.87). Farrell, Bengelink, Merkel and Sonday were second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:34.52).
Calvin returns to action next Friday when it competes at Oakland University in a dual meet set to begin at 5 p.m.
