ADA, Mich - Today the 17th-ranked Calvin women's soccer team traveled to Ada, Ohio to take on the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern.
The Knights got rolling early when they earned themselves a corner kick four minutes into play. Looking to play quick,
Elie Farrell (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) sent a short pass to
Liz Williams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) just outside the eighteen-yard box where she turned and sent an arching cross into the middle of the field. Fighting her way through the Polar Bear defenders,
Olivia Rawls (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) got on the end of the cross and sent a header past the diving goalkeeper to give Calvin a 1-0 lead.
Fifteen minutes later
Sophie Mueller (North Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon) found the ball at her feet as she pressed forward toward the Ohio Northern end line. With two defenders closing in, she sent the ball toward the top of the eighteen-yard box where Williams came flying forward to hit a one-time shot to put Calvin up 2-0.
In the second half, the Knights continued to keep pressure on the Polar Bears as they earned another corner kick in the 64th minute of play. When the cross came in, the Ohio Northern defense tried to clear the ball but instead sent the ball to a wide-open
Rory Pruis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian). Pruis took one touch to settle the ball before sending a shot into the bottom left corner to extend the Calvin lead to 3-0.
For the rest of the match the Calvin defense continued to snuff out any opportunity that the Polar Bears tried to create and the Knights walked away with another impressive win.
Senior goalkeeper
Kalex Dodge (Leslie, Mich./Leslie) recorded four saves during the match to post the shutout win.
COACHES COMMENT: "This was a really good result for our group to wrap up non-conference play," said head coach
Emily Ottenhoff. "Ohio Northern is a really good side who plays quality soccer and competes hard. Our group was really efficient in attack and scored three quality goals. We still have a number of things to improve on as we head into our first conference match this Wednesday."
UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Wednesday, October 3rd when they open up MIAA play at Alma. Kickoff is set for 4 PM.
