CHICAGO, Ill. – The 18th-ranked Calvin University women's volleyball team was unable to slow down the Maroons from University of Chicago in a 3-0 defeat on Wednesday by the scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-14.
Chicago (14-2) came out of the locker room strong from the opening set, building an 18-5 lead on the way to a 25-16 first-set win.
The Maroons' confidence continued to rise going forward as they finished the second set on an 8-2 run to win 25-17, and then used another strong start to the third set to close out the match.
Chicago was strong on the attack all night, finishing with a .317 hitting efficiency while Calvin (9-4) hit .124.
Aerin Baker (Saugatuck, Mich./Saugatuck) led Calvin with nine kills, followed by four kills apiece from
Allison Moore (Tequesta, Fla./Jupiter Christian) and
Emma Ekblaw (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton).
Mackenzie Gerig (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) led the Knights with 13 digs.
Delaney Kemp (Frisco, Texas/Frisco Centennial) finished with 10 assists and four digs.
NEXT UP: Calvin women's volleyball will return to action on Tuesday, October 1, when it hosts Hope College in the MIAA season opener at Van Noord Arena. That match is scheduled to start at 6:30 PM.
