Calvin Women's Soccer Forced to Settle for Tie With Heidelberg

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's soccer team was forced to settle for a scoreless tie with visiting Heidelberg University Saturday afternoon at Zuidema Field.

Calvin (1-0-1) outshot Heidelberg 25-4 but were unable to put one in the back of the net over the course of 90 minutes of play.

Heidelberg goalie Brigid Enright was superb, making 11 saves including several strong stops in the second half when the Knights pressed the attack.

Calvin threatened in the first half on a breakaway through the right wing by senior Elie Farrell (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton Warrenville South HS) but Farrell's shot from the right side of the box was deflected away by Enright who came off her line to cut down the angle and make the defensive stop.

Senior Sophie Mueller (Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon HS) nearly scored twice in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. Her first chance came in the 47th minute as she sent a low dipping shot in the that was saved at the near post by Enright. In the 55th minute, Mueller smashed a shot to the far right post that Enright parried away with a one-handed stab.

Seconds later, junior Lucy Iverson (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS) redirected a shot in the box that deflected off the post. In the 60th minute, senior Elizabeth Williams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) cranked a shot that Enright deflected snared.

Calvin recorded nine additional shots over the final 29 minutes but did not find the back of the net.

Senior Kalex Dodge (Jackson, Mich./Leslie HS) was also credited with a shutout in goal for Calvin.

COACHES COMMENT: "Credit to a hard-working Heidelberg team," said Calvin head women's soccer coach Emily Ottenhoff. "They earned the result today. We're going to have to regroup and learn how to come out sharper and with a more toughness going forward to get the results that we want. I look forward to seeing how our team responds going forward."

NEXT UP: Calvin travels to Wittenberg University next Saturday for a 1 p.m. match in Springfield, Ohio.
