GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's soccer picked up its second win in as many nights, downing Lake Forest 2-1 Saturday evening at Zuidema Field.
Saturday's matchup featured a pair of teams that competed in the 2023 NCAA III Tournament with Calvin the defending MIAA Tournament champion and Lake Forest the defending Midwest Conference Tournament champion.
Calvin scored a pair of first half goals and withstood a late Lake Forest score to hold on for the win.
As they did in a Friday night win over LeTourneau, the Knights used the air to score early as junior
Jonah Meyer-Crothers (Sylvania, Oh./Sylvania Northview HS) sent a corner kick from the right wing that senior
Jacob Goodling (Charlotte, NC/Covenant Day HS) was able to head into the back of the net. The goal by Goodling gave Calvin a 1-0 lead in the 23
rd minute of play and was Goodling's second goal of the season.
Just over four minutes later, sophomore
Foster Garrett (Canton, Mich./Salem HS) broke through the right wing, eluding a pair of defenders on the rush and slipped a low shot past the keeper to put the Knights up 2-0.
Lake Forest scored a late goal in the 81
st minute to cut the deficit in half but Calvin's defense held strong the rest of the way.
The match was a physical contest, featuring 24 fouls and five yellow cards. Four of the cards were issued in the second half as the intensity of the game ramped up.
Calvin held a 14-11 shots at goal advantage.
Senior Kaelen Matascatillo (New Kensington, Pa. Minnesota Virtual Academy) recorded four saves in gaining the win in goal for the Knights.
COACHES COMMENT: "Really good to get the win," said Calvin head men's soccer coach
Ryan Souders. "Lake Forest was extremely committed and put us under during various moments tonight. Coach Andrews does such a great job with that group and I've no doubt they'll be back in the NCAA III Tournament. We'll take the points and look forward to a tough Ohio trip next weekend."
NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to a tournament hosted by Ohio Wesleyan next weekend. The Knights will face host Ohio Wesleyan next Friday at 6 p.m. in Delaware, Ohio. On Saturday, they will meet Ohio Northern at 7 p.m. at the same tournament and location.
